Who the fuck said they thought it was deep and profound? Its good because it isn't. It is unpretentious, gritty without being over the top, and realistic (considering). The fact that you even compared it in such a way to the serial crime shows on the networks is downright pathetic.
Yeah, it's gritty and "realistic" because they're allowed to swear and show nudity/sex. Beyond that it's just a string of tedious cop-show cliches. If only they had cut the emphasis on the cops in half and diverted the saved effort into the street segments the show would be worth watching.

How many full episodes of The Wire have you actually seen?
I watched the first 11 episodes, but I couldn't make it through the season because it was completely disappointing.

Though I did like The Wire, I totally agree...needed more about the street action and much less about the cops (and why the crap so much air time spent with the news room during this last season...wtf was that about)
My list:
1. Sopranos
2. Deadwood
3. Band of Brothers
4. Oz
5. The Wire
He again worked with Ed Burns on creating the show. They originally set out to create a police drama loosely based on the experiences of Burns when working on protracted investigations of violent drug dealers using surveillance technology. During this time Burns had often faced frustration with the bureaucracy of the police department, which Simon equated with his own ordeals as a police reporter for The Baltimore Sun. Writing against the background of current events, including institutionalized corporate crime at Enron and institutional dysfunction in the Catholic Church, the show became "more of a treatise about institutions and individuals than a straight cop show."

Maybe all those cliches are an accurate representation of how real police work, but that doesn't mean they aren't cliches. I've seen them in countless cop movies and shows, and it's tiring.

Also Perknose, how the hell can you even consider John From Cincinnati? That was like easily the worst show that's ever been on HBO and I'm a big Mitch fan.

I tried watching it thinking it would be special, but it turned out to be just another cop show. Cue angry boss yelling the main character's name in his office, character's partner sighing at another crime scene, corrupt cops being douche-bags, and hard-ass cops with hearts of gold solving cases on a miraculous, unlikely chance discovery. Tedious.
