I am in the process of upgrading the rankings page (current). I'm doubling the number of projects, 19 when all is said and done. There will also be a new ranking system based on WU totals.

A sample of the new pages is here. I would appreciate any comments about broken formats, etc.

Thanks,
MM

I don't know about a ranking system based on WUs. Each WU in each project takes a different amount of power to produce. Maybe you should base the points system on (total teams in project)/(rank in project). Just a sugestion. I have always been a big fan or your rankings page and I'm very, very, very, glad to see the project list increased.

My philosophy with the Rankings page(s) has always been that they are first and foremost a convenient way for the listed teams to find their daily rank in a variety of projects.

A minor secondary effort (and one I do only because there was interest) is to give some overall ranking. This is not based fundamentally on the amount of power a team possesses. At best one can only get a rough estimate of a team's power; although some have made the effort, the differences in client computing power between projects and the differences in performance due to O/S, CPU, memory, etc. in a given project make it an infeasible (IMO) measure. I had looked at using the total number of teams back when I started doing this, and it is also a relatively poor indicator of strength.

Instead I choose to weight each project equally (which tends to benefit smaller teams), and use a relative WU ranking (which tends to benefit larger teams). It is the only objective scheme that I have found that is easy to understand and that I can live with. I realize it won't please everyone, but when have I been known for trying to do that? Things should get interesting as it is unlikely a team can dominate in nineteen projects.

I will of course have a page of explanation on what everything means, this was just a format check, not a content check. But if you are curious, for each table entry. the bold upper left number is the official rank, the team project DCI is below, and the 1, 7, and 30 day official rank changes are shown from top to bottom on the right .

Ah so you are using a combination of the two. That sounds like the best option to me. I was confused at first and thought that only the WU ranking would be used which I thought could be abused by a team doing very well in a project were WUs were relatively easy to obtain.

What he said!

Could you add some SB stats too?

Thanks!

Confused

This is a bit off topic but does SB run on macs? (Mac OS 10.2)

And is there a que server.... I might be switching a few machines over to other projects for a bit.

Some interesting changes here. I liked your original rankings page but regretted that so many projects were missing from it.
The breakdown into project types is a good idea, especially for those teams that specialize in one or another of these categories. The layout is simple and easy to read., good job there.
You might consider adding the GIMPS project to the Math/Crypto section. While not as mainstream as others it is one of the oldesr DC projects out there.

Nice work MM!

Cheers,
Marc

PS: Now that the ecc2-109 project is getting started will you adapt your Eccp-109 project progress pages? I liked the analysis and would appreciate seeing it done for the new ECC challenge.

GIMPS is a great project. Unfortunately, like many of the distributed math projects, it has no support for teams. If/when GIMPS produces separate stats for teams, I will find some way to include the project. (It also has the difficulty of not having a single overall WU.)

As for an ECC2-109 progress page, I wasn't planning on doing one. The ECCp-109 page took some effort to keep up. I spent 1.5-2 hours every Sunday morning on that thing (on top of the time I spent each day doing the Rankings and team ECCp-109 stats). Although the data collection was automatic, the analysis in IDL was not. Neither was converting the graphs from postscript to png in the GIMP. So unless I get really bored (which has been known to happen daily ), I won't at this time be doing that.

Hum I hadn't thought about that. Ars has a team but they have to use a roundabout way to get individual production numbers (using machine identifiers as user names).

Sorry to hear that MM, it was a very nice site. Still it does sound like a lot of work. You could always collect the data just in case you change your mind ..
Thanks for the work on the rankings page and the progress data for Eccp never doubt it is appreciated.

Cheers,
Marc

Okay. All the scripting is (possibly) done. The "possibly" part is because I haven't decided yet if I want to add a little something "extra" to the mix. And it's only 5000+ lines of unadulterated, unoptimized, unefficient (yes, that's right, it's so bad it can't even be spelled properly) code.

Anyway, launch draws nigh. Here's what has yet to be done:

1) create/convert database tables
2) retrieve/store completed project data
3) create site home page
4) create rankings intro/FAQ page
5) if ("possibly" == "reality") Code "possibly";
6) run script and watch meltdown :Q

I should get to most/all of that list today, in-between/during the crappy football games.

I just stumbled across your updated site a few minutes ago, then rushed over here to catch up

I've already posted an update to my own team (we love your site!)
