Rant: AVG "Free" Edition

I've been a user of AVG Free Edition for awhile now, but now it's starting to get on my nerves. I've been getting browser pop-ups twice a week on both of my computers telling me to upgrade to AVG 8.0. I'd be willing to do it, except it seems that version 8 is no longer free. It seems that AVG 7.5 "free" edition is now basically an adware program that tries to get you purchase their retail product, which is annoying because one of the purposes of a good AntiVirus product is to BLOCK adware! Grr.

So... what are all of the cool ATOT people using for a free AntiVirus software package nowadays? Avast? ClamWin? A pirated copy of Symantec AntiVirus from work? OK, OK... I was kidding about the last one.

Anti-Vir works good for me, they just have a pop-up ad every update.

Spyware Terminator with the ClamAV plugin. Free, and it does both AV and Spyware sweeps, plus real-time protection.

This happened about 6 months ago too. It's just for a week or so to try and get you to upgrade to the buy version. It does it for me on startup because that's when i have it set to update AVG (i shutdown every night). It goes away, at least it did for me. I saw that pop up once a few days ago, and nothing since. Last time it was every day for like 3 days and it went away.

That's weird, I don't get any of those pop-ups. Been using AVG free for about 6 months now. I also use the Kaspersky standalone scanner (wish it had updates!).

How much has avast changed? I never liked it because you seemed to have very little control of what you can do, less than what AVG free let you do.

No popups but my AVG on all the machines now seems to go out of date at times and you have to manually update it....


I too use a router with a firewall at home and I dont seem to have half as many problems as others do.....

Avira Antivir is probably the best thing around at the moment, I dumped NOD32 for it. But these things change by the month so who knows what's going to be 'it' by May.

I never had popups to buy the full version, but i really wish I could get the thing to "silent update", I hate those popups telling me the % downloaded and informing me it has now been updated
