There was something you could do to stop the popups in AntiVir... registry change or some value in a config file (don't remember exactly), but it worked for me.

Anti-Vir works good for me, they just have a pop-up ad every update.

You only get signature protection with the free version from what I recall. That's not quite enough these days.

A particular thing I like about the full version is that you can set the heuristic paranoia level.

Corporate edition is ok, but the home version is by far one of the worst applications ive ever had the misfortune of coming across

It's not a "nag box", it's full screen pop-up ad! On my two computers, it popped up a browser window twice a week for three weeks straight. Worse yet, doesn't give you the option to turn the update checking off.

Looks like adware to me.

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys. I'm an Avast guy now!

i think i'm using 7.5 on my main system and my htpc. if i just leave the htpc idle long enough, it eventually opens an ie window about something. maybe the new version?

the strange thing is, that never happens on my main system no matter how long i let it sit.

They did the same thing when they moved from 7 to 7.5, AVG put up pop-up windows. Only time will tell if they release a free version of 8. On their paid version, they dropped the anti-virus only option, so the base purchase is the anti-malware suite. AVG is still the cheapest anti-virus software out there.

BTW, I recently worked on a computer with AVG Internet Security, and wow you want to see a memory hog! I love the base anti-virus edition as it uses <4mb ram. The internet security edition uses >300mb ram!

I make the distinction when it's just a company advertising their OWN paid product with their free product. That's much more acceptable to me than advertising another company's product.

hmm...it's not april 1st any more...what gives?

Symantec Corporate Edition isn't bad as long as you install it yourself without the corporate policy rules. It lets the IT Nazis enforce some really draconian rules, too, like forcing daily full drive scans at noon and disabling the stop button.

The home edition just seems to be an evil ploy to force unsuspecting consumers into buying the latest version of their full security suite every year.

I got the AVG Pro version for free a couple of months ago. There was a promo code that did the upgrade w/o even asking for any form of payment. I think that I might still have it somewhere if anyone is interested....I will do a semi-quick search to see if it will still install.

If you got pop-up on your desktop, you suck at internet and contracted spyware. Fail.

I haven't had a single pop-up from AVG 7.5. I've been using AVG in some form for years now...great experience. I only wish they had a free version 8. I used the Beta Version 8 and it was quite nice.

I just built a new machine for a friend a week ago and installed AVG Free and never had an issue. None of the machines in my house are having the issue you speak of either.

popups = spyware = porn = fail

The other week I cleaned a computer for a friend and he asked me why I didnt have near as much trouble with my machine and I replied "because I dont look at near as much porn as you do".

This coming from a guy who completely filled his HD with porn videos and was excited to send me the "two girls one cup" video lol.

I get the occasional nag screen asking me to upgrade to the pay version, but since it's their FREE verison, I kind of expect it.

Overall, I have no complaints about AVG's antivirus.

I agree that Norton is probably somewhat better, but they've gotten so dammed expensive to renew licences that I finally gave up on them. Too much of a hassle buying a new edition every year, even when it may be free. (after rebate)
