Rant: Chewing Gum

Seriously, why in the world do people do that? That is a pic I took yesterday.. it is freaking me out.

It is irritating the fuck out of me.. having to deal with this everyday before class. 80% of the chairs have at-least one gum sticking under the writing tablet. Bunch of assoles and skanks.

Reminds me of the time when I was a young kid in school, and as punishment for acting out in class the Teacher made me stay after class, gave me a razor blade, a cloth, and told me to scrape the chewing gum off the undersides of the desks for an hour. I didn't act up in her class ever again after that. Actually, I'm mistaken... I did act up once more after that, but had the lesser disgusting chore of wiping the drawings and graffiti off the tops of the desks using a cleaning powder and wash cloth. Ugh!

Our grade 8 music class (this was nearly 30 years ago mind you) had a gum jar full of used chewing gum that sat on top of the piano in plain view. If you were caught chewing gum in band class you had to put the piece you were chewing in the jar, and take out another piece from the jar and chew that one. Once word of this leaked out to parents she was fired and never taught in the public school system ever again. This was in Calgary, Alberta.

A friend of mine used to be a teacher. He had some gum remover...it was basically a spray bottle that froze the gum and made it brittle so it could be easily removed from carpet, walls, etc with a metal scraper. Look into it if you want to clean up...

That's why most places have a no gum policy.

Gum chewing is banned here at work due to these digusting actions. Not sure how strict its enforced though.

Smoking was banned on the premise recently for similar reasons as well.

That is seriously awesome, but sad that she was fired for teaching kids a lesson.

That does not make it anymore justifiable. Just because students can get away with it does not mean it is the right thing to do. It is a disgusting habit, unhygienic and worst of all - sticks to your jeans/pants and does not easily go off.

I chew gum often and it bothers me as well. Trashcans are everywhere, especially in places with tables and desks. It's simply lazy or consciously being a dick. Neither one is good.

Where did I say it was justifiable? My point was that college students are often even more inconsiderate and self-centered than older people.
