Perhaps I didn't explain it clearly enough. It'd be like trying to protest an Abercrombie in the mall, but having to do so from outside the entrance to Macy's parking lot on the far side. And quite frankly, if he feels so seriously about it, talking to his friends and family and encouraging them not to go would have a bigger effect than trying to get random drivers.
In any case, I do not think they 'hate the military' and being a private establishment they were entitled to everything they did. I think they should've given the rest of your money back though... that was pretty punk. This has happened to me once or twice with people under 21 a few years ago and usually we got our money back. I am making the assumption you were less than polite and probably confrontational. Bouncers never respond well to that.
