So, we're in Macy's and I'm trying on some boots...need a new pair after completely wearing out the Clark's I'm now wearing.
Anyway, trying on a pair of Timberlands. Just standing there in my stocking feet and putting on one of the boots onto my right foot.
Had to stand up to "force" the boot onto my foot.....tight fit. Foot plops down into the boot and I suddenly get stabbed by something very sharp inside the boot. The sudden stabbing pain makes me jerk my right foot up and I lose my balance a bit and step forward on my left foot and hit the display counter with my left foot. Unfortunately, I hit the counter's bottom with my foot, breaking the 4th toe on my left foot.
I sit down, now in a lot of hurt, and yank the boot off. Inside the boot is a 1" tack sticking out of the heel area...the object that stabbed my right foot, which is now bleeding. Come to find out, the tack was a tack used in the construction of the boot....used to mold the boot to the last, before the outer layer of leather is stitched to the outside of the boot and the lining is sewn in. These tacks are supposed to be removed just prior to the outer leather is sewn to the mid-boot form.
So, now I'm standing there, right foot bleeding from the heel and the left foot with a broken toe.
Store manager gets down to me after a few minutes and apologizes profusely.....really wasn't Macy's fault as it was a defect in the boot itself. It was a result of very poor quality control on Timberland's part.
Get sent to the Hyannis hospital's ER. Tetanus shot, antibiotics for the 1/2" puncture wound on the right foot, X-ray confirmation of the broken toe on the left foot, which is now very discolored---a nice red/blue color.
Damn antibiotics cost $159 for 10 days of treatment, but got a bunch of oxycodone for the broken toe.
End result.....Macy's is on the hook for hundreds, if not into four figures, of expense for the ER visit, meds. Really crapped up our last minute Christmas shopping. But the store manager did give me a brand new pair of Polo boots, gratis. (They were my second choice in what I'd tried on.)
Store manager also recommends I find a lawyer to "tickle" Timberland for payback, as he put it.
So, crappy night, pain, blood, and I didn't even get paid overtime!
