Ok, so I'm a cashier at target, well my official title is cart attendant, because I get carts besides cashiering.

At every job I have worked, I go it at A time, and leave at B time.

If I have to work over, I am usually asked "Hey would you mind working over for 20 minutes or so?"

Today I worked from 4pm to 11pm.

That does not sound bad, until the fact that I have to get up at 7:45am the next day to work.

I need my sleep, or my work performance goes down the toilet, but that is everybody.:sneaky:

So I work my 7 hours, thinking I would get to leave at 11pm, get home, chat with my GF for a few minutes, and hop into bed.

WRONG!

When 11pm rolls around, I shut my light off and walk up to the Service Desk, waiting to hear the usual "11pm? Well Ok, see ya and have a good one."

Instead, I'm greeted with a puzzled look on the GSTL's (shift manger) face.

So I ask what's wrong.

I am informed that when I work until the store closes, I have to do "whatever needs to be done" until up to one hour after my shift ends.

This made me extremely mad, but I kept it to myself and put a smile on my face.

I was never told when I was hired on that I would have to work up to one hour after my shift ends if I work to the time the store closes.

As a matter of fact, overtime was never even discussed.

I was never told the entire time I worked that I might have to stay over.

So here I am, feeling like a prisoner being held against my will.D:

So I ask what I am supposed to do.

I'm told to get hand baskets and distribute them around the store.

So as I am about to get a cart and load them up with hand baskets, another GSTL approaches me and tells me to help a couple team members to help load a large box into someones van.

So I bundle up, go out, and help, and come back inside.

I take my coat, hat, gloves, vest, and walkie talkie off and proceed to get back to distributing hand baskets.

So the GSTL says she doesn't want me distributing handbaskets, and instead wants me to clear the lot.

So I put my coat, hat, gloves, vest, and walkie talkie on and go clear the lot.

20 minutes later I walk back inside.

The GSTL says "That looks wonderful, your done."

So I walk to the time clock and punch out.

At this point, I am very worn out. I cannot even focus my eyes properly.:'(

I walk up to the service desk and the other GSTL says "Where are you going??"

I told her that the other GSTL said I was done.

"Well ....were not done working."

At this point, my patience is wearing paper-thin. So now not only am I being told to work over, I'm being told to work longer than what the other GSTL said.

Luckily, the other GSTL said. "Oh it's okay, he can go home."

I told my GF that I would be home in 10 minutes, 45 minutes prior. I did not get to talk to her because she went to bed.

[End Rant.

If no one died and you still have your penis, I think the night was fairly successful all things considered.

Welcome to the real world.

Many jobs don't have "defined hours," but instead, you may have a pre-set schedule...but it's not cast in concrete. You may have to work overtime, your shift may change daily, and you may have to work more days than you were prepared to work...

It sucks that your managers don't have their shit together...and don't communicate, but otherwise, especially in retail during the holidays, that sounds pretty normal.

is this your first job?

No....4th.

Managers don't have their shit together big time. A couple of the ones we have now have their head up their ass 24/7. If I need help with my register it could be 10 minutes before they bother with it. I have even ran out of change before and it took another 5 minutes before they got it. They have a big "Oh I'll do it later" attitude.

I went to my local target today cuz i needed to pick up something

The moron cashier didn't know how to use the scanner. he kept complaining that it never worked. i told him to try scanning the barcode. 2 seconds later.. <beep> it works.

Yes... wonderful how it does that when used properly.

i guess target is the new walmart when it comes to hiring 'tards?

It's called "working for someone else" and it usually involves being ordered around and doing things you generally dont want to do, but have to because well, you are working for someone else.

The rest of the working world deals with it. Welcome to life.

Try being ordered to work an extra 8 hours on Thanksgiving or Christmas and completely missing your family at that time. Then we can talk.

Story doesn't include someone trying to pull a gun in a non-threatening situation. 2/10

It's retail...and the holiday season. These places will hire almost any warm body to fill their temp positions.

The other day, I worked from 10am to 3am the next day then had to wake-up at 7am for a conference call then go into work at 10am. And sadly for the last two weeks, it's been rinse and repeat.

Cry me a river.

How many GSTL are there every shift? Remember this is the christmas season, looks like the store needs every available body. Business gonna slow down by late January, so maybe your hours may be cut later on.

This sounds like normal procedure in the retail/fast food world to me...if you're scheduled to work until closing time that usually means you work your shift until the store/restaurant closes and then work however long it takes to close everything down, clean up, prep for the next day, etc. before clocking out.

When I worked fast food back in HS (Chick-Fil-A) I would routinely work a shift from after school let out until closing time (9pm) and then an extra 60-90 minutes closing everything down, cleaning everything and doing basic food prep work for when the morning shift came in the next day.

People may sounds harsh to you, but the truth is once you'll be working on call or overtime on a regular basis, you'll realize why people are giving you a hard time.

a lot of people don't get to make their own schedule and their job governs their lifestyle.

So trust me when I say, you're not suffering that bad. just control your temper and deal with it.
