Rant: Rice-ology 101

I searched for "rice carbon hood" and came up with nothin'... sorry if a repost. Chill and have a :beer: on me.

I have to ask what the logic (or lack of) is behind putting a carbon fiber hood on a FWD drive? I think this ranks higher than even 4" exhaust pipes on half an engine (4 cylinders), which only make a car sound out of tune and degrades your back-pressure, robbing away HP.

Care to add any more rice-isms?

I have a blue RSX but I have not really thought about doing it.

If people want weight reduction, they can start with retarded licence plate covers and dealer decals on otherwise terrific looking cars like yours :disgust:

The weight reduction.. It won't adversely benefit handling, except maybe in the rain. But I don't see how you can justify spending that much money to lose like 10 lbs.

But having a FWD vehicle, you would want that weight over the drive wheels to give better traction. I wouldn't have a problem with a CF deck lid or hatchback.

I guess this is more concerned with looks than true performance. Maybe that's the point I'm missing.

To me it's just a cosmetic change. A few pounds from just changing your hood is not going to make a beans of difference from stock performance unless you make a lot of other modifications.

They just want to immitate what Chrysler did with the 1968 Hemi A bodies. They came with black fiberglass lift-off hoods as did 1969 1/2 6 pack cars.

There is some swingshift guy at my work who drives this riced out honda civic, which is bright yellow with the black carbon fiber hood. This is funny because the guy is fat and must weigh at least 250 himself. The car looks like an irrate bumble bee. And I have suspicions the "boost gauge" might in fact be an old alarm clock. That is all.

ummm non-carbureated cars dont need backpressure... that being said 4" exhaust pipe on naturally aspirated 4 banger is way overkill.

No. That only gives better traction in the wet. When it's dry, it's more centrifugal force in addition to the traction.

I don't know what kind of car your driving, but cars still need back pressure in the exhaust manifold or headers. I could put the biggest exhaust pipes on my car I could find to let it breathe better, but after a certain point performance starts to go down. If you don't have some back pressure, a vacuum will form which is not good. This is why running a car without headers or a manifold isn't good. Not only is there pollution, and noise pollution, but it doesn't help your car with performance. (This is how it was explained to me, and made logical sense. If I am wrong, someone please correct me).

Well, because the heavy engine is in front, reducing weight would be a good idea in order to provide a better front to rear balance. That said, carbon fiber hoods are rice 98% of the times they are implemented. Also, what's worse is that a lot off carbon fiber hoods aren't truely carbon fiber. A lot of them are fiberglass with a thin carbon fiber layer on the top to get that weaved look.
