Rant: Self checkout lines...

Why ohhh why do people with a FULL shopping full of groceries do the self checkout lines? These things are there as a compliment for the express lines and aren't made for more than a few items each.

Two guys today were taking up two computer screens (4 total on this side of store) to checkout one freaking cart at the grocery store!! Took them like 10 minutes! If they had just gone through the regular checkout line they would have been done in half the time....

Stupid people, I tell you!

At least people in your area know what they are and how to work them. Whenever I got to Kmart there's a 56-year-old guy wandering around asking if those four registers are open.

i try to not use them, the stores need to employ More Humans
not less, people need someplace to work!
same reason i stay silent when using "information" {411}, and
i use the toll booths where Humans work instead of the "ezpass" drive by setup

No not really, they didn't know how to use them, that is why it took them so long.

I only use them if I have a couple items as I'm pretty quick with them, leaving in less than a minute from scanning my first item.

Geeze maybe if humans can't work as checkout people they'll try and do something more fitting of the human potential. only the stupidest humans hit the ceiling of their abilities at the check out counter!

Anyway I've never seen an automated one.

I will not use them unless they give me a discount, for 2 reasons

#1. They are taking jobs away from people, so therefor they have to pay less wages, and should offer me a discount.

#2. I am doing the empoyess job, therefor saving them and again they should pass the savings on to me..

Just my .02

Love the self-checkout. Do my entire order on it. Of course, I'm only 1 person so I don't take up to consoles....

Won't be long before all check out lines are self check/scan. Retailers love the idea of not having to hire checkers.

YOu walk up too a booth, scan your own food, and insert your cash into the machine. It's kinda like getting a soda from a vending Machine.

What I'd like to see is a buggy that has seperate "compartments". You walk through the groccery store and put items into whichever "compartment" you want them. Each item has a tag on it. You just go to the checkout and a scanner is able to read the whole buggy at once. You pay for it and go out to your car. Then you just take the "compartments" out and put them in your car since it was "bagged" when you got the itmes off the shelves. Guess they could charge and extra $1 or whatever for the little plastic things.

Target doesn't have them I don't think.

Kmart does because Kmart is ghetto and doesn't care about it's customers, only the bottom line.

I work for Target, and a machine cannot provide adequate guest service really.

Can't dispute wrong prices with a machine, can't get a machine to take a check that won't read quite right, etc

Target cares enough about it's guests to actually have people take care of them.

**realizes if some target somewhere has these automated checkouts he's gonna look st00pid

Uh, have you not ever used them? It's not like it's the entire store, just a few stations. There are more than enough employees to help. At the one here there are 4 checkouts that are self-whatever and 1 person who stands at the end of them to help people or I guess make sure they are scanning everything and not stealing.

I would much rather check myself out than go stand in line and wait for someone else to handle all my stuff... There is still an employee right there if you have any questions or problems.

And cavemanmoron, do you go out in the road in front of your house and dig holes so the city road workers will have stuff to do? Do you make all your phone calls through the operator so she can feel special? Do you periodically go out and snip your cable line on the pole so the cableguy can come visit you and feel worthwhile???

Technical progress... It's an amazing thing, if you can pull your head out of your ass to see it.

Ok just confirmed Target doesn't use these things anywhere.

I guess Kmart is the only store to use em.

and, well, kmart sucks.

yeah yeah i guess they're ok if you wanna use em, but my store always has tons of cashiers available, lines never get too bad. 2 people at the most, usually.

I love those things, man. I use it whenever I'm not buying vegetables. I'll use one of those with veggies next time.

How do they keep people from skipping stuff while they are scanning? To me it sounds like a huge risk to the company, way to easy to steal.

At this point, they are not intended to replace cashiers, at least not anytime soon... They are there for people who have a few items (and half a brain) and want to be in and out of the store quickly. Many people would argue that is what express lanes are for, but I've been in many so called express lanes that take many times longer than a self scan machine. They suit thier purpose very well. In the future, if they do start to see wide spread use, they may in fact eliminate a few cashier jobs. But at that point in time there will other entry level jobs to take their place. That's the way the ecomony works, and thank god, otherwise many of us would still be farmers, field hands, and unskilled laborers! I suspect there will be quite a few jobs opening up in the Point of Sale equipment repair field to deal with all those self scan machines!

Plus, I'm sure the security alarm will go off if you try to walk out with an unscanned item.
