RANT: Why aren't more games on DVD?

So, I got my new Athlon64 system set up, and it's time to start off right. Nice Fresh install of Windows XP Pro, a few basic utilitis I always need, a couple programmng tools, and now the fun part. Time to re-install my games.

Far Cry: 5 CDs
UT 2k4: 6 CDs
Doom 3: 3 CDs
etc...

But the Sims 2 is out as both a CD version and DVD version.


Why are game manufacturers not publishing on DVD? It's 2004, and yet we're stuck installing from CD. Not such a big deal when you install one every now and then, but it's a real pain in the @$$ back to back...

So, I thoght I'd whine on the forums about it.

Don't know about UT2K4, but Farcry came with my Vid Card, So I guess I should't complain about the lack of options there.

In general, though, this is a pain.

because not everyone has dvd players, there are more cd players than dvds out obviously.

I have UT2k4 on Dvd. Whole game installs on one DVD, extra DVD contains some movie clips for modders & other features.

Microsoft needed to make it a requirement for winxp that would have made DVD standard real quick.

They dont put out software on DVD because not everyone has a drive, people dont buy drives because they have no software need for one, repeat.....

Someone would probably find a reason to sue for that even though they may have been the ones that reccomended it...

As said above, not everyone has DVD drives. So, they market to Lowest Common Denominator.

It's probably more expensive to manuf DVD's, at least vs 3-4 cd's, but, I imagine that's negligible in the decision. They could have 2 packages, but, then there's the whole marketing and shelfspace issue, and dealing with folks who buy the wrong version, etc.

Because you'd have to produce 2 masters, one for cd and one for dvd, and a lot of times, it doesn't make financial sense to do so.

I don't think you can get Far Cry on DVD. I got one with my motherboard as well as a retail version and both were CD. One was only one disc, but it is a CD and not a DVD.

Honestly, the cost difference between cds and dvds can't be that much, especially if you have to put several cds while only one dvd.
