Ok, this is just a rant, so I really won't be offended if nobody replies.

Man, my brother in law and sister can be so dumb with their money. They are living with my parents, they are already in debt (a large amount as well), looking for a house, have two cars and a daughter to look after, and what did they do? They went out and bought a new car!!! I can't believe how dumb that is, they claim it is for "better gas milage" but there is no way in hell they are going to be able to save the money from gas milage on the car that they just bought.

What is almost worse is they did not do any research at all, they just went out this Saturday after doing 10 mins of google and came back with a new car! My goodness, what on earth where they thinking? The car they traded in was rarely driven and I doubt this one will be either.

Again, this is just a rant, but man it just makes me mad to see such ignorance, especially when they already have what they need.

They have only been living with them for about a month, and houses arn't easy to find where they are looking. It is just dumb though for them to do something like this when they already have so many obligations, and it was for no reason other then "We wanted a new car".

I just don't know what they are think (if they are thinking), and it just makes me feel so sad for the newborn that they have.

Sounds like my aunt and uncle. They did stuff like that for years. When they got divorced a few years back they were each $15K in debt.

Buying a more fuel-efficient car isn't just about saving money. It's about saving the world

You should show them the math based on how much they drive, how much they save on fuel, and figure out what the break-even point in mileage would be. Of course, it'll be moot now that they've already bought the car, but at least it may prevent future stupid purchases.

They can probably afford a new car now with no rent of house payment I can imagine lol. So that means they will be shacking up with mom and dad for quite a while

true, but that isn't a plausible excuse for something like that. you only buy a car when you know you can afford it or are able to pay back the loan you'll need to take, and from what it sounds, the OP's sister isn't in that situation.

I guess another thing that makes me mad is that a couple of years back, my dad gave them a really small, but very fuel efficient car (I believe it was a Samsung X2 or something like that), they traded that for a Nice car (the type slips me) then that car for the SUV they had, and then the SUV for this car, all within a matter of like 2 years... And they still have 2 cars!, they don't even need or use both of them, My dad is employing both of them and the office is like 800 meters from my parents home.

the samsung I am pretty sure about, it was a two passanger car that looked a bit like a SMART car (no trunk or storage) it could have been another name, but I think it is a samsung (or some other s name)

The RAV4 is definitely what they got (looked it up on the Toyota site) as for the samsung car, again, I am woefully ignorant of car manufactures models, and the such. but that is a bit off topic, the point is, they had a car that was very fuel efficient that they traded for a couple that are not, and then their excuse for getting a new car was "It is more fuel efficient"
