I work in food service on campus. You have realize it's often pretty hectic working back there when things are busy, and if you've been back there for a while you get used to people asking for a few specific things. Plus it's usually pretty loud, and people talk so softly I'm pretty much reading lips to understand what they want.

Umm, since there are only hamburgers and popcorn chicken, why not just do the simplest thing imaginable and just say "chicken", and/or perhaps couple that with a gesture that indicates you desire to partake of food from the bin/tray that contains the popcorn chicken. Duh.
