I am talking about 99% of rap: THE VAST MAJORITY.
Tell me of a rap song that has a noticable melody, maybe some strings, guitar: I dunno.

Here's a question that enters my brain quite a few times a day: Why is rap considered music?
Rap is simply foul-mouthed poetry with some random sound effects. There is no melody, no noticable chord progressions, or nothing that would even be considered music.
Thoughts?

Are you a retard? A guitar? There is PLENTY of music that doesn't use stuff like guitars. Making beats is just as difficult as using your thumb on some strings.Originally posted by: dcpsoguy

You obviously know nothing about rap.

Rap is music but I doubt 90% of the rappers know what a chord or scale is.

I wouldn't call it music. I believe it is an art-form though.
While I'm still not sure why white kids love it I know for me rap talks about what I know well not the hummers and stuff but the hussle the drug game and stuff like that. "Gangster" rap is what was really going on when I was growing up everyday someone got shot/stabbed in NYC and I'm sure it was/is like that in Cali and other places.
Same here. I've seen people list all these rappers in these threads that I've never heard of so I'd download the songs they recommended hoping to be finding a whole other world of rap that might appeal to me more, but so far no luck. There are certainly quite a few rap songs that I do like very much, but by and large the genre (along with techno where there's also quite a few songs I like) just don't do it for me most of the time. I guess it's just personal preference. I think a lot of it is based on lifestyle and mood. I tend to like things that keep me relaxed and in a good mood. The vast majority of both of these genres tend to be too dark and intense for my tastes and usually stress me out or get me depressed after listening to them for too long. And I realize there's technical skill required on the production end of these songs - not to mention the artistic end when it comes to the actual lyrics and/or any musical novelties thrown in to try and make the song sound unique. But seeing as how the beats and rhythms are the driving force behind these genres of music (even more so than other genres IMO) and after seeing how easily my brother could throw together a VERY smooth sounding rap/techno track (granted he does studio engineering professionally so it came a lot easier for him) it only further reinforced my impression that the musical core of the rap genre is rather cold. But like I said at the beginning it IS music.Originally posted by: BlinderBomber
It's music. I don't like most of it, but it definately is music.
This entire thread comes down to that argument. There are many of those metal bands where you can hear what they are saying, it fits, and it makes sense. But then, there's also good, and 1000x more bad, country, FI.Why is Heavy Metal considered music? People screaming at the top of their lungs so you can't hear what the hell they're saying doesn't sound much like music. Go Figure.
