I've seen problems that crop up from using unlike drives in a RAID0 array (data corruption mostly). Also IMO, it's kinda dumb to waste 40GB of space on the 120GB drive.Originally posted by: Bot69

Could you elaborate please
Probably because at this price you're paying 5x over cost, so they can afford to replace it 5xOriginally posted by: amdskip
How can they stamp a 5 year warranty on these drives, are they just that good?

Performance is nice, but $3/gig sucks.

I know but I'd like to see how these puppies are doing in raid
Apparently, just *one* of these do better than two of the original 36 GB in RAID 0, so I would fathom that 2 of the 74 GB versions in RAID 0 would do even better. However, just one is fast enough for my needs - data is more important to me than the speed I would achieve by running a couple in 0.
I'm running it off of an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe; plan to use the latest Uber BIOS that can be found on amdmb.com's forums. Apparently some good performance benefits from the Uber's.

And the point you are trying to make is.....?

He asked how they do in RAID 0; I pointed out that one does better than two of the older in RAID 0. OK?

No it's not OK:
You simply express a guess - I was asking for benchmarks or more objective information - like how much faster can I expect this to be than a 120 GB/8MB cache 7200rpm drive. Or how fast does his system boot or something else that is quantifiable and thus comparable to other drives.
Peace

I have a really hard time believing that a single 74GB Raptor can outperform 2x36GB Raptor's in RAID0 in sustained transfer rate (STR)...this would require the 74GB model to have TWICE the sustained read speed as the 36GB, which it clearly does not. For STR-intensive activities such as bootup and editing large files, the RAID0 36GB's should win hands down.
Valsalva
Fair enough; I'm sure STR would be something hard to beat with a single 74. Perhaps I should have said this instead: as the seek time of the newer 74 GB version is an average of 4.5 ms and users have reported an average seek time between 4-5 ms running two of the older 36 GB versions in RAID 0, I would feel more comfortable using a single drive as the integrity of my data is more important to me than the seek times I may obtain running two of the older 36 GB versions. However, it appears as though more intensive STR activities might warrant two of the older drives...if you can deal with such a paltry hard disc size. Again, just expressing a guess. Actually, let me rephrase that: I'm just expressing an opinion. ;-)

Regarding your post - my point exactly you are trying to be helpful by responding to my thread but you are adding nothing that I asked for, but your conclusions on information you saw elsewhere and your own feelings and assumptions about something you do not own yourself.
No offence but that was not what I was asking for...
Peace

They also slapped the old 36 GB version on sale for $109 (one day only as of 2-23-04); anybody want to run RAID 0 on those will only spend $218 shipped - not too shabby if you can deal with the size!
