Raptor vs Maxtor 16MB...

Okay, there was a thread here a few days ago about this but I can't seem to find it now. I tried doing a search and it doesn't seem to want to accept 'raptor' as search parameter so I am truly sorry for repeating this question but, which would you honestly pick? The a 74.4GB WD Raptor or a Maxtor 300GB 16MB?

Please don't just vote, but state your reasons as well. I already have the Maxtor 300GB (planning to use it as a storage drive). But if people don't think it's worth it, I'll get another 300GB Hard-drive for backup purposes (I really hate only having one HDD in my computer). Thank you for your input guys!!

maxtor makes the crappiest parts I've ever used

3 maxtor drives - all 3 failed w/in 2 years.

Maxtor has been fine in recent years. I've had just as many WD drives as Maxtor drives go belly up.

You don't say what your objective is. If you need size with speed, get the Maxtor. If you need speed as a top priority, get the WD.

I would get both. I'd use the WD for a boot drive, and the Maxtor as a 2nd drive. But that's just me.

I don't have much to store and I like my hard drive nice and neat meaning any program I do not use often I uninstall. No clutter. My preferenec is speed and thus I feel the raptor was the way to go for me. I have 14gbs used on mine, plenty to go and if I need more storage, I just get an additional cheap IDE and keep the raptor as my boot/application drive. It is blazing fast.

I'm running on the maxtor 250 sata 16m, I personally can't tell the difference. . .but what I do know is that the warrenty is just 1 year. I can't remember but compusa has some other brand that comes with 5 year warrenty. . .

Are you getting 2 of whichever and running raid0 ? I was too broke to go that route. . .

i avoid maxtor drives like i avoid taking a dump in a mcd's bathroom =P have had multiple maxtor drives die within 1 year time. lame.

I agree with you, though I'd get 2 Maxtors and RAID1 them. I plan to do something very similar this year if my DV jobload goes up like I hope it will.

if you check over at storagereview...there has been alot of complaints regarding the Maxtor DM9/10 drives...amke sure you get oem for 3 yr warranty....

I realize the posts of complaints are a minority but I had a 1.5yr old maxtor 160gb DM9 die recently...it had a 1 yr warranty ...got when they changed retail to 1 yr...pissed did not know they were doing that....

I went Seagate..5yr warranty....oem or retail!...I know not as fast as maxtor but I doubt in real world you see much...I got 2 x 200gb 7200.8 sata drives...faster than my DM9 160gb 7200rpm drive and quieter

Maxtor's SCSI drives are spot on. Their consumer level ATA drives are the lousiest ever.

The raptor is marginaly faster due to the rpm and resulting seek times. The seek times are what makes the computer "feel" faster. That said, I still believe the raptors are way overpriced for what they are, I tried one and quickly sold it a couple of weeks later to someone who had bought into the "raptors are awesome" mentality that is so rampant now.

BTW: I'm now running a 36gig 15k scsi boot drive on an LSI controller and the difference is VERY noticeable over the Raptor.

the raptor is faster but u need to take in consideration u will only see seconds loading stuff faster.

Thing is, I've only had one 20GB maxtor drive and it hasn't failed me in these 5 years, so I'm ok with them. But since I have a spare 200GB Seagate drive (which I trust a lot), I will use both as storage drives. I'm just thinking whether I should partition the Maxtor drive into 100/200 and then I can do perfect backups of important data.

I would like to have the raptor for its speed and snapiness but I've heard some people mention that it's not THAT much faster hence this thread, asking whether the raptor is worth it. Otherwise, I'll just get another 300GB Seagate drive and use them both in RAID 0 along side a backup from my spare hard drive. I'm paranoid when it comes to data, absolutely won't stand for losing any of it.

Depends on the type of system I am building... but generally speaking, I'd get a Maxtor DM10 over the Raptor...

i think it depends if you need space or not, if your not going to use it go w/ the raptor if your loading tons of stuff on your computer get the 300GB

For my part, I've had several Maxtor drives for several years without a single problem (knock on wood).

I swore off Western Digital a few years ago, as I had three of those suckers (over a 2-3 year period) bite the dust.

So, as you can imagine, nothing pisses me off more (in HDD speak) of someone singing the praises of WD and ragging on Maxtor.

Maxtor drives have served me quite well over the years.

Maybe I got caught during bad times for WD, but I'm biased against them today, just as those who got bad Maxtor drives are biased against Maxtor.

Anywho... last I knew the DiamondMax 10 (Maxline III) SATA 16MB series was the creme of the crop at Storage Review.

Good advice, since you already have a Maxtor for Storage I would get a Raptor for booting, but if you still need more storage then get one of each. I have had a number of WD drives both at home and work and I haven't really had many (if any) problems with them.

You might find this article on Raptors helpful. It's pretty detailed and well done and should give you a good idea of whether or not its attributes will appeal to you. Like a lot of computer components, the best choice depends on what you're going to do with the computer and what your priorities are. (But I'm sure you already know that.)

On a personal level, I'd get neither. Ever hear of Seagate?

I've seen *WAY* too many WD (Will-Die) harddrives fail on my friends and clients who bought them, thinking they were getting a good deal. Craptors are no excuse. They're the bottom of the chain, IMHO.

YMMV, but I'd buy nothing but a Seagate or Hitachi harddisk.

Perhaps that is because the Maxtor SCSI drives are made by MKE (Panasonic's parent company), and their IDE drives are made elsewhere (soon to be made in China)?

I'm pretty-much a "WD guy" myself, but I'm also running a 250GB Maxtor as well. (It was on sale.) Although, I did swear off Maxtor after one of their 60GB DM+9's died on me in only six months.

and do you guys think that having a 300 GB Maxtor 16MB cache would be worth it for the future and a secondary hdd?

i am still gonna use the Raptor as primary for performance.

maybe you should wait for the Seagate 16mb cache drives. so you have maxtor drive speed but seagate reliability!
