Interested in peoples opinions as to the quality of pre built PCs. I had a Gateway about 10 years ago and replaced it with a Dell 5 years ago. Looking to get another new one and do not have the time, desire or inclination to build my own. How would you rate Dell, Gateway, HP or others? Looked into Lenovo, but did not see any desktops with C2D processors. Looking specifically at something built with Intel C2D E6400 2.13GHz, 1066 FSB, 2GB DDR2 memory, 250GB HD and a single CD/DVD burner running Vista Premium. Customer support is not a major concern. If something breaks and they will send the part, I can do the repair. I know enough about PCs that I am the one friends call when they have problems.

I've never heard of any OEM that would do this...

Had a bad HD when my Dell was new and they shipped a new one to me under warranty. I replaced it and sent the bad one back to them.

I've heard decent things about Dell or you could always go through ibuypower.com - something like that. My old rig was an ibuypower build and I was happy with things.

Guess I need to pay attention more.

I prefer Dell. The price is good, they provide full OS restoration CDs, you can get ALL the driver CDs online, and they've been known to ship parts to you if it makes sense.

I prefer HP over Dell, they're latest machines are all really well built, come with real OS install CDs, have fairly straightforward driver downloads, fairly good tech support, will ship parts or send us a box overnight to ship back laptop for maintenance, and get it back to us within a week or less in most cases.
However their Identity Management Software (Finger Print, Smart Card, etc...) has a few bugs in it; they have existed for several months and have still not been fixed, despite the fact that almost all of their new business laptops contain features that use it.
I have really grown to dislike Dell, some of their prices are lower, but not enough to justify their (falling) level of quality and support, imho. I have heard good things about Dell servers though, just don't like their desktops and laptops. We currently have all HP/Compaq servers and are not likely to try a Dell anytime soon especially since we are consolidating a lot of our servers on to HP blade servers. I cannot say how good HP/Server's support is due to the fact that I have never had to call them. Their drivers are also fairly easy to download, although I have heard form others that they are a lot louder then Dell Servers, not that that counts for anything really.
