First, to answer your questions:

My computer will be used for web development and online marketing. This involves

• Constantly downloading / uploading data
• running virtual machines
• Editing videos and photos using After effects / Photoshop CS6.
• Basic office software

My budget is $1000 CAD but the cheaper the better. I can always upgrade later if necessary. All parts will be purchased from Canada. I plan to buy from NCIX, and have no brand preferences.

I Already own:

• SSD
• 2TB HDD
• Monitors (2x DVI 1xVGA) @ 1080p
• Keyboard
• mouse
• Windows 7 Ultimate

I plan to overclock the system. Hoping to get the build completed ASAP. May consider waiting for boxing day sales though.

Here is what i've picked out:

CPU: i5-6600K (hoping to push this to 4.5 GHZ)
MOBO: Gigabyte Z1710X
PSU: Corsair CX650M
Case: Generic $30 crap
Cooling: Corsair Hydro H100I V2
Ram: 4x 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws V

Total comes to just over $1000, but I haven't yet looked for price matching opportunities. Does anyone have advice regarding parts I should swap out, or will this be suitable for my needs?

Looking at the prices on NCIX, i'd say go with an Intel i7 6700K instead of the i5 6600K, and switch from 32GB to 16GB of ram. Should work out to be the same price.

You can always upgrade the ram later, but the cpu is much stronger for the tasks you listed.

But I'd recommend adding the additional 16GB sooner than later based your stated uses.

If the OP is running a lot of VMs, then going with Intel's HEDT CPUs such as the i7-6800K might be worthwhile.

Very true, but that setup might be very tough on a $1000 CAD budget.

Not sure, honestly. I think reviews are set to release sometime in mid to late January. AMD has been all hype for 10 years, so I'm really hopeful the new Zen turns out decent. We need some healthy competition, and it will force Intel to stop releasing new CPUs with only a roughly 7-10% performance increase over their previous generation. I'm ready for the wild-west days of the late 90's and early 2000's.....and cheaper CPUs
