I am building a computer and need a rating on my hardware. If you have any suggestions just post them. Other than that give me a 1-10 on my hardware
CPU- AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ (Socket AM2), or conroe dont know which one to get though<=Please hel
Case- i dunno what i wrong with the vento(i like it) but i guess if it is false advertising(saying it has an amazing cooling design) then i dont want it. And lian li's cases, no offense, are not that appealing. They might have good performance, and that is what i want, but they are really expensive.
Combo drive- Nec 16x DVD+R DVD Burner<=Changed
Cpu Fan/Heatsink- Zalman CNPS 9500 (Socket AM2)<=No Scythe ninjas for AM2, actually only 2 scythe fan/heatsinks for am2
Hard Drive- Seagate Barracuda 7200 16mb Cache<=Changed
Motherboard- ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition (AMD)
Power Supply- SeaSonic S12-600 600W<=Changed(is this too much power?)
RAM- Corsair XMS2 2GB(2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Graphics Card- Waiting until Directx 10 compatible cards come out.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
There is another reason for this waiting, if I find good parts now i will stick with them...And as i am waiting the price will go down. But i still probably look for better stuff. Also i am waiting for Vista

ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME

Its a pretty solid rig aside from the ASUS Vento being the ugliest case in the history of mankind (Why not go Lian-Li if your willin to spend 140 on a case). Also the power supply definitely is the worst component in there, plus I would really suggest switching to a SATA hard drive.

Overall it is a 1, as you have no graphics card yet. When DX10 comes out and you get a new Video card + Power supply it would be a 5, and easily overclocked to maybe a 7. Mostly because by the time DX10 hits, conroe will be mature and AMD might have 65 nm on the way.

Since you're waiting for the DX10 cards, why not wait until then to put the machine together. You may have more/different choices by that time.

What's the primary use for this machine? I'm guessing games.

get a sata hdd instead.

you'd want a more reliable power supply if you're going to spend that much on a computer. take a look at some seasonic power supplies. they're a lot more expensive but you get what you pay for.

considering that we have no idea what you are using it for i could say it will be an excellent rendering maching or overkill to search online.

waiting for dx10 cards is a waste, they won't be out for some time. get a decent card now and then when the dx10 cards come out in however long (probably years) pick one up.

also, imo m/b is total overkill

get a better power supply - look here http://jonnyguru.com/ratethebrands.html

no reason to waste $$$ on a aftermarket hsf combo

you may as well go a sata hdd since the price is probably the same

I give it a 3 until you switch the PSU, get a SATA hard drive, get a more appropriate motherboard, ditch the 9500 unless you're overclocking and get a video card unless you're willing to use whatever you might already have.

Case is a personal choice. I don't even need to click on the link to know that I would find it offensive, but you might find my plain polished black metal look to be offensive so it's a wash.

i'd drop the cpu down to an X2 3800+ AM2 (save money and its a negligible difference in day-to-day computing), get a nice 300GB sata drive for around 100 bucks on newegg, get the NEC 3500A dvd-rw drive for around 40 bucks, and a *quality* psu that has at least 450W.

i agree with trey22, you gonna OC this machine?

if you wait until dx10 cards, then thats during Q4/end of this year. you might as well get something now to hold you off until then, like a geforce 7600GT/7900GT or an X1800XL/X1800XT.

i'd give it a 6.5/10.

If you're going to wait, might as well wait for Conroe and price cuts on both sides, as well.

thanks for the input, i will primarily use this machine for gaming. I guess I should wait to build on until the DX10 cards come out, also can someone explain the main pro/cons of different hard drive connecters because i really dont know the difference. and also can someone post the exspected release of windows vista.
Thanks

there is little to no difference in performance. SATA is a tad faster, and it also has a physically smaller connection, which gives you less clutter and better airflow. This is a good thing.

Nobody knows exactly when Vista is due. Sometime next year.

Dont buy your system yet if you can wait a month or so. When Conroe comes out, that X2 you selected will go down in price a lot. Plus, Conroe will probably make a joke of current X2s.

Lord of mercy, the internal design of that case looks simply dreadful. The exterior is kind of cool, in an 80s ferrari kind of way... Yuck. To each his own though.

Get a DVD burner. The price difference is laughable at this point.

DX10 cards are still a way off. If you want to build a computer this year, get yourself a DX9 card. I suggest a 7900GT.

Dont waste so much $ on that board. If you must have SLI, drop down to the non wireless model. The price difference isnt worth it.

Rosewill sucks. Get an Antec 550W that is SLI certified. That will give you zero problems.

I also second the motion of getting a 3800+ X2 instead of spending $50 for an extra 200 MHz. Not worth it IMO

Good cooler though...

I give you 4/10. A bit misguided, but in the right direction.

If you look at my specs and think I'm a hipocrite, I had an opportunity to upgrade from a 3500+ 939 system with an old PSU, some old hard drives, and 1gb of DDR to my current system for about $200... That was a no brainer.

Wait a month or two and get conroe with 2gb ddr 2 667-1000mhz ram, then get a geforce 8 or radeon X2900 class card

akshyt dont you have your own problems to deal with? go troll somewhere else

overall i'd give it a 2 because of the following:
bad case, bad quality, bad cooling, ugly. look into lian li for better cooling and unmatched quality
bad psu, get something from FSP, enermax, PCPC, or seasonic
get a different hard drive, from SATA or SATA II, IDE is old, and maxtor hard drives are bad
zalman cooler is okay, but much better can be had for that much money, look into scythe mine or scythe ninja

overall.. do some studying in these forums and redo your build or work around it

The last person you want any advice from is akshayt.

I've never used a Rosewill PSU, so I can't really comment on that. But I do agree w/ LOUISSSSS on choosing another case, either Lian Li or even an Antec.

For the hard drive, I would go with something other than Maxtor, and that has a 16MB cache. Seagate and Western Digital have some nice 320GB models.

oh yeah. I think akshayt may have ruined his reputation here forever.

Anyway, I would definitely switch away from a Maxtor and get something like a Western Digital or Seagate. I won't comment on the case, if you like it. Case is a lot of one's personal preference.

My friend had that case in apple green and it was unreasonably heavy (bad for LAN parties), and he got rid of it for that reason + his RAM was overheating. He switched cases and no more overheat problems.
