Hi there,

i'd like to build a mid/high end gaming system. Can you experts please comment on my choices below, in a bang-for-buck sort of way. I am not an overclocking zealot but I will but wanting a few extra ponies. What parts would you swap? Any problem with compatibility? Prices are from UK so ignore those. Already got a dvd burner, monitor, etc. Thanks!

1 x Antec P180 Black SPCR Advanced Super Mid Tower - No PSU £68.06
1 x Corsair HX Series 520W Modular PSU - ATX12V v2.2 APFC £57.43
1 x Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 Socket 775 Onboard Audio SATA ATX £92.17
1 x OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC with LIFETIME WARRANTY £98.71
2 x Seagate ST3250620AS 250GB SATAII/300 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM £82.44
1 x Zalman ZM-STG1 Thermal Grease £2.89
1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40Ghz 1066Mhz FSB CPU £129
1 x EVGA 8800GTS 640MB DDR3 KO ACS3 £263
1 x Scythe Ninja Plus Fanless HeatPipe £23

Change the DS4 for a DS3, good choice on the RAM.

Where are you getting these prices, by the way? I can't find anywhere over here that does an E6400 for that kind of price?

why go for the ds3? i assumed the ds4 would have more recent components, better upgrade path and such.

my prices are excluding tax from ebuyer for most parts

Looks like you did your homework. It's a nice rig. Enjoy. I wouldn't change anything.

looks very nice to me.

how often do u upgrade?

do u plan on going sli/crossfire at all?

you may want to pick up a more forward looking PS such as a 620 if so.

otherwise it looks perfect.

Thanks, certainly feels like i did homework. I haven't upgraded in abuot 3-4 years, and this is my first proper ground up build.

I don't plan on going sli/crossfire, probably just get a better card when the time comes. Unless sli/crossfire get more efficient in the future, then yes i'd need a bigger psu also.

thanks

If i was you I would just buy a 150GB Raptor for your OS and get a 500GB SATA for storage...if you need raid for one reason or another though go for it though

I agree. Also I prefer to use a 74gb Raptor for boot, that way you don't have to worry about enabling 48-bit LBA later and having the extra partition to deal with. I hope you enjoy the machine.

I take your point about the fast boot drive, but reading some "real world reviews" i just don't think it will make a big difference compared to a 7200.10 drive. i suppose if i'm not happy with my seagate 7200.10 then i can get the raptor and do a quick reinstall.

Ok I know the 7200.10 is pretty fast, but Seagate drives are generally louder than Western digital or Samsung, especially their seek noise.

From the parts you listed, it seems like you want silence with good performance, so I would suggest the WD AAK 500GB or Samsung HJ501. They are both highly praised at SPCR.
