The Baltimore Ravens terminated running back Ray Rice's contract on Monday, hours after TMZ Sports released a video showing him punching his then-fiancée in the face in an Atlantic City hotel elevator in February.

The team had no other comment in its statement announcing Rice's release.

Rice's assault on Janay Palmer, who he married in March, drew a two-game suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell -- a penalty so severely criticized as too lenient that Goodell recently revamped the league's personal conduct policies covering domestic violence and assault.

The NFL says it never saw the video until Monday. The grainy video apparently shows Rice and Janay Palmer in an elevator at the Revel Casino on Feb. 15. Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing. Earlier video of Rice dragging Palmer from the elevator has been shown repeatedly, but the video shown Monday showed Rice striking Palmer twice, the second time apparently rendering her unconscious.

Earlier Monday, league spokesman Brian McCarthy regarding the video: "We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today."

Rice's suspension was scheduled to end after the Ravens' game Thursday against the rival Steelers.

TL;DR version for those at work:

He spits on her before going into the elevator and it looks like she backhands him but doesn't look to be all that hard.

They get into the elevator and she slaps him again and he backs up against the wall. She lunges at him and he strikes her with his left fist and she goes down face first into the handrail.

But he supposedly accurately described what had happened in the elevator before this new video came out so it's not like no one knew what he actually did. So this must be to avoid bad press, right? I can see how any team would be tempted to sign him but wouldn't they also want to avoid the bad press?

Almost every contract has a morality clause. One punching your fiancee in an elevator then dragging her our of it like a dead animal would fall under that.

The union and lawyers are going to eat the NFL on that. He was already suspended and half of his "punishment" was carried out this weekend. So its not like this change was done before it started, its in the middle of his punishment.

Almost every contract has a morality clause. One punching your fiancee in an elevator then dragging her our of it like a dead animal would fall under that.

Most of those do not hold up well in court/arbitration. Vick got to keep a lot of his money and so have other players. But it also depends on what was in the contract. Could be after Ray Lewis the ravens added something that was not there before.

EDIT: Looks like it was just a non-guarantee contract, no clause or anything. So not getting any of that back.

Besides we're talking about playing a game for a living, which is a privilege not a right. He has a college degree if I remember correctly, so he and Ray Rice should have no problems finding a job outside of the NFL, that is if someone wants to hire them.

You're not allowed to say that type of stuff though. Suggesting that a women is capable of causing someone to hit them is the same as saying because she was wearing a mini skirt she was asking to be raped. It doesn't matter that she assaulted him first, he hit a girl and that is bad! Equality be damned!


I still think it is funny that Ray Lewis was on trial for murder and the Ravens stood behind him 100%... Beat your wife though? Cut!
