"To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass off for all his life just to gain ratings is a horrific (sic)," she wrote.
- Janay Rice

Honest, to the point, and she's right.

Fuck the NFL on this one.

So, TMZ is claiming their sources in the hotel and the police station claim the NFL had access to the elevator video.

It's not just TMZ. Well-respected and ethical journalists that have sources in the NFL front office have been saying the same thing since the story broke way back when. Everyone knew that there was a video from inside the elevator and everyone on the inside of the story said the NFL bigwigs saw it right when the story broke.

Because, had that actually happened, the story would have been "we were in an altercation and I pushed her, she hit her head, and you can see me dragging her to help."

Well, I don't know. Remember, the Ravens took his word for it, so he told them something that wasn't what the tape showed.

No way he told them he gave her two haymakers to the grill.

I could have understood if his girlfriend had actually attacked him and he simply overreacted and on reflex hit her.

This is what I initally thought because it happens more times than we actually may be aware of. Fwiw, I grew up with four sisters, 2 of which deliberately provoked their boyfireinds at times, so I can understand that too.

The problem with the suspension is all sources are saying the NFL had access to all the tapes, not just the outside one.

True, but "having access" and "seeing them" are not the same things. I believe the NFL buried their head in the sand on this one, because they don't want any more negativity.

TMZ was able to obtain them, why couldn't the NFL?

They didn't want to.

Goodell is just self serving in this case. It became bad publicity, so he reacted and banned Ray Rice. Had this video never surfaced on TV, nobody would give a shit. And that is the real problem. The NFL doesn't care about player conduct as much as it cares about public opinion and harming their brand. They are willing to let tons things go, so long as the public isn't made aware.

Agree.

Also, I have to agree with the Raven's player who is saying the news networks shouldn't have this video on repeat. After I watched it online, I saw it on TV quite a few times. I can't imagine that is easy for the victim to watch.

In fariness though, she clearly tried to defend Rice. I don't recall her stating what really happened. While I agree with the sentiment, I don't feel sorry for someone complicit and lying about what really happened in that elevator.

Have you seen the video?

Yea. Clearly it's horrible and indefensible.

Disagreeing with NFL decision doesn't change that of course.

Physical abuse is striking and easily seen, emotional and other abuse goes on in relationships as well and can be as or more damaging than a single punch. The two will need to work it out, up to them. Unless the NFL wants to start putting into contracts how their players must treat their wives, I don't like what this precedent sets.

This BS about her being weak b/c she's defending her husband. Don't get it. Takes strength to speak out against it and against the NFL publically. She also calls out the NFL for exactly what it's doing, submitting to ratings rather than any real concern over domestic abuse.

I think she's smart enough to know that doing so meant she'll take a lot of heat and BS from holier than now idiots with no idea what she's gone through.

Rice's appears authentic on it, let him recover from it. Banning him made the situation worse, wife thinks so as well.

Not buying that for a second. If they suspended him while purposely not looking at evidence in the case the union would have owned their ass. They had an obligation to look at all the tapes as part of their investigation before they could do jack shit about it. I agree that they didn't want the negativity and tried to plead ignorance of the tape hoping it would never be made public, but they damn well knew about it and saw every frame of it.

Wife stayed with a criminal, woman-beating thug because he's rich, now she's sorry to see the pay check disappear.

Possible, but I think this demeans her to fill a simplistic narrative.

The extra punishment here was media induced IMO. Fucks can't help but trip over themselves to stir shit up and leave destruction in their wake.

Right, but my claim is that they weren't looking for evidence. I seriously don't believe they had this tape, saw it, and only gave Rice two flipping games well knowing that it would eventually be made public...I don't think they're that stupid.

I think she demeaned herself when she failed to do the right thing and get this guy behind bars the first time it happened. If a woman tolerates getting beat up and goes back for more there's nothing anyone can do to demean her further.

It's her and his shit to deal with.

AFAIK it hasn't happened again.

And your claim doesn't hold water because EVERYONE ON EARTH knew there was a tape from inside the elevator. They didn't need to go looking for it, that tape was part of the evidence right from the very first minute. The only reason they would have to purposely bury it is if they knew what was on it and the only way to know what was on it would be to view it. Without viewing it there was a chance that it would help to exonerate Rice and defuse the situation and they damn sure would view it to know for sure.

AFAYK that wasn't the first time it happened and AFAYK it could have happened a dozen times since then. AFAIK maybe the only lesson Ray learned is to beat her up only in places where he's sure there's no cameras.

Well, I hear ya there. You simply don't have the tape from only the outside of the elevator without having the tape from the inside as well.

After suspending Gordon for a year for failing a comparatively non-essential drug test, I find it difficult (though not impossible) to believe they would only give two games to a guy after busting his now wife in the face twice and knocking her cold, alongside the dragging video.

The NFL reacted to the media release of the extended cut of the video footage and percieved fallout if they didn't react.

IMO if that extended cut doesn't get out publically, NFL doesn't react.

It's exceedingly unlikely the NFL wasn't aware of the full extended cut from early on unless done through some kind of intentional plausible deniability fraud.

I in no way condone his actions, and it's really interesting to see how our 'observed' society works. If you're famous your video is disseminated by three likes of TMZ for the world to see.

We've already gone over this. If there was a video on the news of me punching out my wife, I'd be fired. No company wants that kind of heat or to be viewed as someone who is accepting of those kinds of actions.

So she spits on him, and he decks her unconscious.

And these are the kind of people the society and media glamorizes. The kids and youth hero worship them. The rich and the famous, the ones who can run with a ball.

And then we wonder why is our society going down the gutter. We deserve it.
