Alkalines aren't too expensive. I can order duracell procells for less than $.50 ea. That's the commercial grade. When compared to rechargables, it's no comparison for value. I use Alkalines in things that aren't high drain...clocks, most remotes, etc. In my touch screen remote and wireless mouse, I use NIMH. I will use NIMH in even more devices if I get a faster charger.
On the topic of these chargers, I have read in a few place most of the 1 hour chargers shorten the life of the batteries. I use a rayovac 5 hour charger that actually takes more like 6-7 hours. The MAHA is generally considered the most popular and it charges in about 3 hours I think. Duration isn't as important as not overheating and getting a complete charge. Some of the quicker chargers have gotten quite good reviews, but the slower chargers tend to give the most recharge/discharge cycles. Pick your poison. Speed in charging or more cycles. As cheap as these things have gotten, I would probably cautiously choose speed.
