Heads-up that the Razer Core has finally released! Mine was confirmed to be shipped out on 05.26.

Looking forward to seeing the performance of an external graphics solution via TB3. Hoping to benchmark this late next week after I receive this...

Preety PSU with a Case and thunderbolt converter (or whatever Used), add another 300$ for a decent GPU and GG, next time just but a desktop instead..

what's the point of this?
its not like u can carry it around with you like your laptop. since it has to stay at home why not buy a steam box or make your own in a fractal node 202 or silverstone rvz02 case? also, it will provide x4 speeds isn't??

Glorified docking station for home I guess.

You can game with your laptop at home and get desktop quality performance, then still be able to take your laptop places without having to carry a 10 pound monster that has a 30 minute battery life.

Its actually pretty cool. I am using it as a docking station for anything TB3 compatible and it allows me to build a modular gaming rig. A couple points below:

Things I like about it...

  1. Something new (modular builds for gaming were not really supported previously)
  2. Compact and easy to move; use my SC NUC for everyday tasks
  3. Provides plenty of inputs and easy mobility and connectivy for VR
  4. Purchasing a MB Pro or Surface Pro 5 (with TB3) this year for wife and she can leverage the GPU for applications with CUDA/etc for animation work

Yep! I like the idea honestly. I could get a nice portable laptop, but thinking the CPU might be lacking anyways.

Oh I agree. I just wish for a faster connection between. We can get fast CPUs in small laptops, but since we cant get fast GPUs, this is a perfect solution.

Hoping it's a great pairing with the 4c/8t SC NUC.

Observations:

  • Have not yet had any issues
  • Keeps the GPU nice and cool
  • Great pair with the SC NUC with extra USB ports
  • Got working with GSync (which is awesome)
  • Performance is great, and OC helps negate the 10% or so loss in performance from TB3 connection

Sorry for the delay...work and travel kept me from being able to use the setup too much....overall loving it and playing Doom right now at 100fps and Eve: Valkyrie on OR. Amazing!

this is a very, very compelling reason. and also TB3 is 3rd generation tech already right? so mostly bug free?

Seems pretty nice, but for $500...ouch.

Even the Alienware Amplifier is only $200 and it comes with a 460w PSU, though it uses a propitiatory connector. Supposed to also work with the AW Alpha R2.

Anyway, looking forward to some testing from you.

The way I think about it is the total cost. All in, the SC NUC + Core is about what I parted out my 6C rig for at the end of the year. The flexibility and 'fun' factor are nice too. It's been a very pleasurable experience, and you can tell Razer put the time into getting it working well. Cheaper enclosures are definitely around the corner, but I do appreciate the amazing build quality.

Love the idea, can't wait for more competitors to join in and prices to go down.

The simplicity of having a single TB3 cable to the enclosure, and have DP/HDMI/DVI/4 USB 3.0 ports is pretty awesome. Its like a enclosure/docking station combined. Honestly, it is doing a great job of cooling as well, with less ambient issues because there ARE no other components. Modular is pretty slick.

Does this work on non-Razer products? Like the XPS 13 which has a TB3?

If I recall correctly, they said that it would be, but that the company would have to add support for it, so Dell would have to add support.
