Previous Deathadder editions are the only mice that 1) sit well in my hand 2) do not jump erratically when I lift the mouse, and 3) do not move my cursor up/down when I pan my hand left to right which helps with FPS head tracking and all. The last bullet point is personal as the mouse movement will depend on how individual holds the mouse, but for me the deathadder is the only mouse that truly had horizontal panning.

That said previous editions have gotten as low as 39.99 in the past, so it stands to reason that this mouse will go down to 39.99 as well. And I'm sad to say, but I would be hesitant to pay $50 for this mouse. These mice are pretty much disposable, they never really last me more than 2 years. After about year and a half the rubber coating starts peeling and the scroll wheel loses its crispness and becomes very loose, so sometimes you can inadvertently change a weapon in game without really meaning it. I'm on my third deathadder and they all "die" in the same exact manner. Supposedly Razer improved rubber coating on the 2013 edition, but the history is what it is, and in the past deathadders did not live very long.

my g500 is exhibiting the left click squeek and it's driving me insane. fleshconsumed, if not the deathadder what other gaming mice do you recommend for FPS?

Great mouse but I have to wonder who these super high dpi readings are really helping. I am glad to know the potential of my mouse is getting more and more precise but I don't think anything above 1600 dpi has ever helped anyone.

*Shrug* It's all marketing as in bigger is better. I'm a fairly high DPI user, most people who use my mouse get frustrated because they always overshoot things. For the longest time I've had two 24" monitors and now I'm on two 27" so I need high DPI to go from one corner to another without lifting and repositioning my mouse a dozen times. However, I found that 1600-2000dpi is the sweet spot to do that. Any DPI higher than that and I have to turn down sensetivity. So it's all marketing, pure and simple. Doesn't mean it's a bad mouse since you can always run it at half sensetivity.

There was a time in my life when I've played semi-competetively. I never played in the tournaments, thank god, but I was good enough to be invited to various clans/competitions. I've tried a bunch of mice at the time trying to get competetive advantage, but to be honest I cannot really advise you anything except trying mice yourself. Most important is how mouse fits in your hand and how you use it. I have had to give away Razer Lachesis because I simply couldn't get a comfortable grip. How you grip the mouse also affects how the cursor moves. Are you using your fingertips, are you gripping the entire mouse, or a combination in between? I bought Razer imperator and I have had to return it because one, the cursor always jumped when I lifted and repositioned the mouse, a known problem for that mouse, and because two, I could never get the cursor to move horizonally when I moved the mouse left to right, you see the most comfortable way for me to grip the Imperator was a little sideways/slanted, so obviously when I moved my mouse left to right the cursor moved up when I moved the mouse right and it moved down when I moved it left. I have tried the Logitech MX518 (I think) and G9v1. In the end I have not found a mouse that fits my hand better than deathadder. However, it will be different for different people.

So I really cannot recommend you a mouse. The only thing I can tell you about razer mice is that they do not last. I have had multiple Razer Diamondbacks, copperheads, deathadders, and they all "went out" with the same symptoms. To be truthful they did not die, they just because gross to the point where I felt I needed a new mouse. All of them felt really warm to the touch after long gaming sessions, most likely because razer insists on the blingy LEDs and the additional heat from those LEDs contributed to the heat build up. Disabling those LEDs improved the temperature significantly, however that requires installing the drivers and with the recent Razer drivers moving setting to the "cloud" and having really loose privacy policy I would never install them (but that's another issue). All of them without fail showed rubber coating disintegration after 1.5-2 years. The Diamondbacks and Copperheads had semi-transparent silicone gasket between top and bottom half of the mouse to help with the grip, that gasket was also lit up by the LEDs for added bling, well, in all of my Diamondbacks and Copperheads that silicone gasket started to "melt" after a year or so of use - it became sticky every time I touched it, I have to presume it was from the extra heat that LEDs were putting out. All of my razer mice without a single exception had scroll wheel loosen up after 6 months to a year. So... basically in my opinion razer build quality is crap. I basically have to buy a new mouse every two years. The only reason I put up with it is because as I said deathadder fits my hand the best. That's the only reason. If I could find another mouse that a) would not jump when I lift it b) did not move the cursor up or down when I panned the mouse and c) was just as comfortable, I would switch in a heartbeat. Until then I'll keep buying new deathadders. However, I would wait for a better deal than this.

Back to your original question, you'll just have to go to your local computer stores and try a couple of them yourself. Buy the ones that you like best, try them out at home, and return the rest.

I haven't found a good mouse to hold since my copperhead died. They're all too big/bloated now.

Razer Imperator is probably about the same size as old Copperhead, but Imperator is not ambidextrous like Copperhead if that makes any difference for you. Or you could try Taipan?

I like the Zalman gun mouse

Takes some getting used to, but I find it a much more natural/relaxed position for my hand.

Just wish it were designed for bigger hands

I've switched back to Logitech after multiple frustrations with Razer mice. I've had button failures, laser problems (granted I had laser skipping on my G500 as well). I've gone back to the older optical logitech g400.

I think I got this for around $30, and it has been the best mouse I've owned out of the last 4 and by far the cheapest to buy.

If you use your whole palm to hold the mouse, the death adder is a good deal, but be aware of the problems with Razer mice before you buy.

$52.99 is a pretty common price for Deathadder. You can buy it for that price from Amazon right now.
I just checked the price comparison at http://bestgamingmouseguide.org/ , and I agree that the Logitech G400s is a great choice. I would prefer g400s over g400, because it's an upgraded version; the Logitech quality is awesome and it costs just $44.54.

G400/MX518 is a great mouse for most people, however the front end is a tad too narrow for me. I like to keep three fingers on my mouse at all times, pointing finger on the left key, middle finger on the scroll wheel, and ring finger on the right key. The G400/MX518 force my fingers to almost touch which really irks me... Plus it's a tall mouse so I can't claw grip it.

That's my biggest complaint as well... I really just want a G400 with a G500 body or Death Adder like body.

Turn up the dpi on the mouse, turn down windows scroll speed. You will notice a HUGE difference in accuracy and "smoothness".

Thought everyone knew this.

I had a deathadder a few years ago which only lasted a few months. It felt really light to me and if I recall correctly the cable seemed far too thin for the price of the thing. I stick to Logitech these days.

Good tip, will try. Not sure if I'd notice a difference but at least I will be using it to its potential.

Hopefully games scale with the windows mouse speed.

Edit. set mine to 4000dpi (I have a Roccat mouse). Wish windows had smaller increments for mouse sensitivity.
