CES: Razer Debuts Windows 8-Based Gaming Tablet
Intel Core i7-powered tablet to debut in 2012 for less than $1,000.

Last week, Razer teased a new product that offered "PC gaming on an all-new form factor" to be announced at CES. Now, Project Fiona is official and we've got the full scoop.

Powered by Intel Core i7 processors, Project Fiona is a Windows 8-powered gaming tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen display and two analog controllers mounted to the sides. It features force feedback, THX-certified audio, Wi-Fi networking and front- and rear-facing cameras. It will run standard PC titles, such as FireFall, HAWX 2 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, though specific graphics processing specs have not been revealed. It is currently just a concept, but Razer says that it plans on bringing a product based on Project Fiona to market before the end of 2012.

Most importantly, the company says that when a finalized version of Project Fiona arrives, it will retail for less than $1,000.

Project Fiona will be playable at CES, so stay tuned for hands-on impressions and videos.

:hmm:

Razer is a joke to me. I don't take them seriously anymore.

Also, using that thing in public would be a great way to garner some funny looks from people.

So, a PC tablet is being gimped with dual joystick controls? Sounds like a recipe for success!

I foresee wrist fatigue. Those handles need to be angled inward, which will only add more to the bulk.

If that make such a crazy device, the controllers must be detachable and the device becomes a svelte tablet with no unsightly gaps or obstructions. (some floating door for a male-type connector, as if those arms slide in.. or other such method to close the gaps)

If they cannot be removed, that thing is dead on launch day. It might make a few sales, but nothing to suggest Razer should continue to produce the damn thing.

If it serves as both an awesome Win8 tablet, and also allows you to attach controllers to play games... that's a pretty awesome device imho.

I'm also looking to have a device I can dual-boot both Win8 and ICS. I was thinking of an ARM Cortex-A15 SoC in such a tablet (seeing as Win8 would work on that), and I know Android would behave beautifully on such a tablet. I'm a little worried how the whole x86 package will handle either OS too, as while there is a good bit of heart in them, I don't know if it will have a beastly GPU if it's using anything Intel cooks up at the moment.

I figure I won't be getting the tablet of my dreams until sometime between July and December, so I'm holding off on a real 10" tablet until it meets all my desires (of which I know the next generation will, as long as one has an unlocked bootloader ). My Nook Color will serve until then, though I do barely use it.. not surprising considering my other tab....phone is the VZW Galaxy Nexus.

Only Metro apps run on Windows 8 ARM though.

Which might be good enough for me. Not sure I really want the full Windows experience on a tablet of any kind. I'd rather something like, well, one of those fancy new Ultrabooks. I have a basic laptop, as a laptop (and the need for a full OS on the go) isn't something of huge import to me at the moment. It would be a matter of convenience, but nothing seriously necessary - I'd rather a more powerful, and more affordable, beast of a desktop... as I recently so decided yet again when a new full system rebuild in the fall.

But a powerful tablet with media-centric properties would be great. In reality, most of our mobile devices are used to consume content and communicate with various tools, sometimes with sparse usage of task- and productivity-oriented apps, like calendars, notes, document suites/editors, etc etc.
If I need hardcore productivity and the comfort of Windows, I'd want to be sitting down and at this point, I'm likely at home or in an office with a laptop/desktop to utilize for work.

Everyone has different uses, but I wouldn't mind the minor limitations of Metro-only. Who knows what will see in the future, something could just be about perfect... even if a little more costly than a typical tablet.
As much as the portability of the 7" devices is welcome, I find I know when/where I'd like to have a tablet instead of being limited to a smaller-screen smartphone... and often I have the ability to pack it without issue.

I'm excited at the prospect, but on this I find it actually easy to wait until something just radiates "I am the one."
I have, in the past, made hasty decisions on sparsely-researched devices or type of gadget, and I find I was quickly more annoyed with that product and finding I enjoyed it less in comparison... or worse, that it was something I really had little use for, and it sits somewhere unused and collecting large amounts of dust.
I'm getting a little better about major purchases that cost hundreds of dollars, though find myself still retarded with less-costly purchasing decisions. So it goes.

Its good to see them experimenting. Maybe by the time cheap tablets can play games like Crysis somebody will have decent controls for them.

Several years ago, razer had avertised a mouse as being able to process some ridiculous click speed. Information said that the finger can only press the button so fast, and mice were already higher than that, so the higher speed did no good for the player. I wrote them a note about the hype in their advertising.

To their credit, the CEO claimed he wrote the response to me. Unforutnately, it was a poor response, but that was still surprising.

Nothing wrong with Razer's peripherals. My wife and I love our Nagas. But this thing however is retarded.

I guess it's good to see companies trying new things, but I really don't see who this will appeal to.

btw... If you look at the galley, it's pretty clear the controller handles are not removable. http://www.razerzone.com/projectfiona/image_gallery

edit: anyone else find it sort of interesting that a company who made a name for itself with mice/keyboards would design a PC gaming product with neither?
