I tried to do a Factory Data Reset on my Motorola RAZR HD, but instead of rebooting, it just shut off and has stayed that way. I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds but no dice. Also I tried holding the power button and volume up button but it seems dead.

It was 100% charged before the reset.

What to do?

Thanks. I tried power+volume down and that rebooted it. However, it boots to the Android guy with the spinning poly-hedron thingy, and then eventually flashes a screen with Android guy lying on his back with an "!" on a yield sign over top of him. Actually I believe I saw that the first time, but it flashed by so quickly I was not sure.

So I guess this thing really is bricked. The good news though it's still under warranty I believe.

Something in me highly doubts this phone is bricked!
You're probably right, but bricked in the sense that for now, I can't do anything with it and don't know how to fix it.

Perhaps there is a way to fix it without taking it in, but my brief search online didn't yield anything.

Have you poked around at the XDA forum for help yet? I'd think that you'd find what you need to do over there quicker than here.

I'm not sure if this was what you were getting at, but for the record, it's not a rooted device. It is just a regular RAZR HD with the standard carrier OS install (Fido is the carrier, and it had the latest OS updates). I did the factory reset to prepare the device to be sold. (I bought an iPhone 5s off-contract to replace it.)

I'll have a look over there, but ultimately I think what I will just do is dig out the original box and materials as well as the receipt and take it back to my carrier for repair/exchange. Hopefully they'll exchange it so I'll have a fresh unit for resale.

If they won't help you and you are out of warranty send me a PM.

Have you tried the following yet?

  1. Power the device off.
Press the power button then select Power off.
If the device doesn't respond to input, press and hold the volume up/down key then press and hold the power button. When the device screen goes blank, release the power button while continuing to hold the volume up/down key then proceed with step 3.
[*]Press and hold the volume up/down key then press the power button.
[*]When presented with the Boot Mode Selection Menu, release all buttons/keys.
[*]Press the volume down key to select Recovery then press the volume up key.
    [*]From the Droid triage screen:
[*]Press and hold the volume down key.
[*]Press and release the volume up key.
    [*]Release the volume down key.
[*]Select wipe data or Factory Reset then press the power button.
Use the volume keys to navigate options.
[*]Select Yes -- delete all user data then press the power button.
Use the volume keys to navigate options.
Data wipe may take several moments.
[*]Select reboot system now then press the power button.
Use the volume keys to navigate options.
[*]If necessary, refer to Initial Activation and Setup.

That's actually normal. A lot of phones do not give you access to the stock recovery to do anything. There is usually a hidden menu in the recovery though. This is where the above post comes in.

I would almost bet anything doing the steps above will resolve it.

I have never owned a Motorola phone, but most phones I've owned you can download the complete firmware package and flash it on the phone from a PC in minutes. This will fix your issue too if the above doesn't.

Try leaving the phone on until the battery is completely dead. Then plug it in and turn it on. I have had this happen to me even yesterday when I tried to update my Note 3 to a new firmware. Rebooting it only gave me a dead android and only when i removed the battery and rebooted did it fully boot up. I know the RAZR has a built in battery so you cant pull it so you may have to wait until that battery is truly dead.

I brought it in today. At first, the person couldn't get the thing to even start to boot using that boot method mentioned above. The green notification LED came on when the unit was plugged into power, and then the LED started flashing when she tried to boot it again using that power-volume-down method. Otherwise it seemed completely dead. It was like this for several tries, even holding it down for 30 seconds. Then strangely enough a minute or so later it started to boot… but it hung completely at the Motorola logo stage. Wouldn't shut off or complete the boot.

So, it's going in for repair. Like you guys, she thinks it's just a software issue.
