With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

The only important
Having used FSR2 and DLSS. AI based upscaling is much better, even XeSS is better than FSR2. It does make a difference to a lot of people. DLSS is what Intel and AMD need to beat, its mindshare is massive.
The only important metric is the one AMD does not have. Any metrics AMD has that Nvidia doesn't have are irrelevant.

So how hard is it to break Nvidia's mindshare? Do they need fail like Intel? I mean AMD did with Ryzen, who knows maybe will.
Pretty much lol.
Even with how successful Ryzen has been since Zen3 especially with the gaming chips I still don't think AMD is there. Amongst people really following along, sure. You grab the average person walking around Best Buy and show them two identical systems but one with a 9800X3D and the other with an i9? My money's on more people choosing to put the Intel system under the tree for little Johnny.

Yes, but mindshare has shifted a lot.

The number of prebuilt AMD desktops included in sales right now has to be a high water mark. So to in laptops. 4-5 years ago or so this would have been unthinkable.

And if Intel doesn’t right the ship? 4-5 years from now could show them massively relegated.

This halo effect has to play into GPUs a bit but I really think it just isn’t the focus right now. Getting to a unified architecture to better emulate Nvidia in multiple markets sure looks like it might be the focus though.

For sure. Just personal opinion, but if Intel doesn't turn around gaming from Arrow Lake and AMD gets a couple years of just being the default answer for every gaming CPU question (9600X3D when?) then that will help AMD in the GPU space. It's certainly not going to take the shine off Nvidia, but it's natural for people to see excellence in one area and transfer that to other places. At the least it might help overcome some of the turning up the noses people get when they do go AMD for a GPU.

If the 8600XT has 12GB, that could be a popular card depending on price
Mb 8700 is 12GB N48?
for me doesn't make sense skip 8700 unless, it's like was with NV 8xxx series only 8600/8800
I think possible like this
8600 - N44 8GB
8600XT - N48 12GB

8800 - N48 16GB
8800XT - N48 16GB

The 7700 XT does not compete with 4070. It's a sad SKU. Dunno why AMD couldn't have positioned it to beat the RX 6800 by at least 10%. But I would expect them to release a RX 8800 GRE which should beat a 4070 Super.
