With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

Between 7900 GRE and 7900 XT is where it was expected for a very long time now.

Whether or not it is a good buy depends on pricing. Sounds like no.
Whether or not it is a good design depends on the power and area needed to achieve that. The rumors are unrealistically small so we'll see what it actually is shortly.
Whether or not anyone will buy it depends on meme marketing of FSR4 as "just as good". Good luck with that.

Crappy naming - 8800 XT would have sold nicely - giving vides of nvidia 8800 GTS...

if there RT and FSR4 is good and also price, people pay attention, ofc OEM is difference story

FSR4 will most likely work only on new chips, most likely require specific games support and we know how "quick" that is. RT on a small chip might be better than before, but no way as good as nvidia's 4th gen in Blackwell - they might even pull off some qualitative jump over "just" doubling it again.

let's wait real gaming perfomance, because 3dmark not reflect gaming perf
We can see 7700XT vs 6800Xt and 7800XT timespy scores, but in real gaming diffent story

There is no basis of this

What we know:
  1. Both RDNA 3 & RDNA 4 have WMMA
  2. RDNA 4 has double TOPS of RDNA 3
  3. Navi 32 & 31 have larger vector registry compared to Navi 33
Given all this, FSR 4 in RDNA 4 should be double of Navi 31 & 32. Navi 33 might have FSR 4 disabled initially but enabled later

Shill points will move elsewhere.
You need to behead the comp, or you die.

100% AMD unfortunately need to do everything better than Nvidia and moreover do it again and again for multiple generations. If not the goalposts will just shift to wherever NV is stronger.

Once upon a time, when NV was making the gas guzzlers, power and heat didn't matter, only performance did. When AMD put out more performant cards (7970 GHz Ed.) then suddenly power and heat mattered. It's just goes round and round.

Frankly the RTG just doesn't seem to have it in them.

Well as, a 6800xt phantom d oc and 7800xt nitro+ owner (so fastest aib versions)
I can tell u my 6800xt oced is faster than my 7800xt oced in some games xD

If $600 (and probably closer to 700€ in Euroland) for RTX 4070 Ti performance in 2025 is AMD's idea of price-point leadership then there's little hope for AMD in the consumer graphics department.

I haven't used a Nvidia GPU in my main gaming desktop for almost decades now, but I will again if AMD is set on doing the silly "Nvidia minus 5%" dance again.
I'm not going to sidegrade my 4 year-old 6900XT for 700€, that's just stupid. Might as well just pay 1500€ for an actual upgrade from Nvidia.

It earned AMD about $0 in net profit and barely moved the MSS needle in the end. It was the biggest catastrophe in ATi history and forever sealed their fate.
ATi history?
ATi was bought by AMD in 2006. RV770 cards released in 2008. If anything, the RV770 was AMD's history.

It's also odd that a ~250mm^2 chip built on 55nm and 512MB VRAM sold for $250 made $0.
At that time Nvidia was selling the GTX 280 with a 576mm^2 chip on 65nm and 1GB VRAM for $430.

How much did a 55/65nm wafer cost at the time? Somewhere between $2000 and $2500?

Doubtful, Nvidia even skipped 8 series back in the day, was only dedicated for mobile. 780ti - 980/ti. Even the 7970 AMD card went to R290X.

Currently the APUs use 8xxx for IGP again mobile. Something about an 8000 series seems to always be skipped or is mobile.

Videocardz has a database with HD8xxx cards, but they have no MSRPs and the release dates coincide with Radeon 200 series.

IDK if superstition or not wanting the Nvidia comparisons, because 8800 was a great GPU.

No it was squarely still ATi history. Took years to get GPUs guys into the corporate fold.

That's the fun part, NV wasn't making money on Tesla 2 either.
And with the bumpgate ongoing, they also posted a few Q's of pretty sizeable losses.
