With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

New cards always tend to have worse bang for buck ratio compared to outgoing discounted last-gen parts (hunting those at the time when n+1 generation lands has always been a good point for frugal GPU purchases, it's like with those price-slashed Ryzen 7000 processors). Completely normal.
It wasn't always like this, at all.

New generation cards would usually wipe the floor with the older one in perf/$. It would be after the new gens being on shelves that the older generation would lower a lot to clean all the stock.

It would be a marketing win to have atleast 9070 below $500

& it won't look good marketing wise to exceed the street price of 7900xt ($650) for a 70 class card (9070xt)

It had better be worthwhile to chase that 4% crowd.

reality will be it will still yell out, at least in the US, at $799 IF performance rumors are true (~7900xtx. ~4080) and the actual final street price is $799. what else are you going to buy? $1000 for a 7900xtx or 5070 Ti?, $1500 for a 5080? it would sadly so be the best performance/$ and available to some extent.

I hate it as well as I was in the market but $799 is simply to high of a price.

Status of the competition:

  • good at $749
  • not worth the money at $849
  • a bad joke at $899 and above

  • Horizon Forbidden West 7%,
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 6%,

Well, N48 won’t beat 5070ti and it wouldn’t touch a 5080 with GDDR7 or whatever. The hype got out of hand again. RDNA4 might still be good from a PPA standpoint if the smaller die size estimates are accurate.

If it ties in raster and makes up at least half the gap in RT to the 5070 Ti it'll probably sell some. At least looking at 5070 Ti pricing in Canada (CA$1250-1350) it's going to be about $200 cheaper and might be available. It won't be flying off the shelves at $1000-$1100 if that's all it brings though.
