With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

Hopefully they just use mods to do fsr4.

I play cp2077 with fsr3.1 fg + xess on my 7900xtx. Optiscaler is so good you can custom tweak the src rez , target rez( super sampling) , sharpness , all on the fly as well . Really minimax quality to target frame rate.

It sux the 7900xtx can't do full rate int8. Hopefully it can do enough bf16/fp16 int 8 to get some version of fsr4.
They should do that if technically possible. It's also in their own interest. Sure it could be an upsell, if their competition would be mostly RDNA 3. But with stopped production and dwindling stocks it will be Blackwell and DLSS instead. What they need to sell first is FSR 4 to developers. And whatever the RDNA 3 install base is, the TAM including it is definitely bigger than without.

In vkpeak you don't need your ROPs and other gfx related fixed function hardware doing anything.

In games, you do, and those all need significant amounts of power too. So the power budget becomes the limiting factor preventing such high clocks
So if you had more power you could go much higher. But that's assuming other parts of the hardware can keep up? And why bother when memory is going to be the limiting factor anyway..?

Guess I'm trying to answer the question of..if you slapped GDDR7 onto it, could you clock it higher to match the increased bandwidth or not?

I think the main reason AMD didn't try with the top die is because of the RT deficit against Nvidia. Think about it, what's the point in "raster parity" or even slightly winning, if then there are like 3 examples (that I have seen: Alan Wake, Black Myth Wukong, Indiana Jones) where in RT AMD is massively behind, the difference is just too big. At those price points (>1000$), almost no one would buy AMD, when you spend so much money for a GPU, you want the best experience without compromises.
Ultimately, knowing what we know now, AMD did the right choice. I know that's maybe not the only reason AMD canned the top die, they maybe thought Blackwell would be better than it is, but still.
You can be moaning about how path tracing is irrelevant, but many people care about it, especially when you spend so much on a GPU, you want to try the latest technologies.
I want to try a slideshow that doesn't work on either competitor but at least I get 10 fps while you get 6. Like what's the point.

The argument here is essentially, this thing performs better at a thing I wouldn't use, therefore I can justify my Nvidia purchase. I don't think you realize how much it's the absorption of Nvidia telling you what's important. Like so many. And I expect you to push back on it. But it makes no difference.

Cheapest 9070 XT I could find locally (EU country) is ~$700 after removing VAT. It's the Sapphire Pulse and already sold out. Stocks are very low for all models. I guess they prioritized specific countries?

There's been no graphics card inventory for a while. I guess there is months of demand that needs to be caught up.
I just dont understand that. You would think that second hand availability and prices of RDNA 2, 3 and RTX 3 and 4 would significantly improve as launches like this happen and people upgrade, but that just doesnt seem to be the case in the past 5 years.

I truly believe scalpers now destroy every single hardware launch to squeeze money out of desperate folks trying to just get a card. I struggle to think of other products with this level of consistent FOMO year in and year out. iPhones and Galaxy's dont seem to have this issue, despite costing ~$1000+. By all accounts there was good stock for this launch, but its all gone in an instant, even at +25% MSRP.

Isn't used RDNA2 cheap or did that dry up too?

Local Microcenter says it has many 9070 XT in stock for MSRP. So we have that going for us. Which is nice. But online prices and stock are trash. Maybe you're right about the scalpers, I don't know.
