With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

Even the 4060 is close to being fully drained. I imagine once it's gone from The Channel, it's gone.
AMD need something vs 5060ti, also there is 5060 and 5050. They missed at least create 10gb card for 250$ with 6700XT perf.
I don't think 9060XT will be vs 5060ti + no media engine would be make N44 is dead, unless NV again super low supply.

Know what one of the best things about this launch is? People are talking about it. I find myself coming to this thread instead of the corresponding nvidia (lowercase on purpose) thread. This is where the action is this time. I can't remember the last time I even bothered to really engage with an AMD thread. It's usually all about what nvidia (lowercase on purpose) is doing. Not this time.

I think that maaaaaaybe that is what AMD wanted to do by launching "last" and stealing all of the spotlight until... when? 5070 is actually $550 at retailers? There is a $350 5060Ti that you can actually buy? I think that nvidia (see what I did there) is going to need to prove it on all the rest of the Blackwell launches to regain steam.

My local Best Buy has many desirable GPU options!

It's better than during the "absolutely nothing go buy an old quadro on eBay" days but its bleak for anyone looking for performance or value.

Yeah but... carrying inventory is expensive AF. Inventory you have to mark down? Even worse. That's money that's tied up for weeks/months and your bean counters are going to lose their minds.

Worse, its AIB's taking and holding inventory with retailers? That's like the worst. Let me know when you get a bill from Amazon for your goods sitting in their warehouse too long, not fun.

That's arguing a public company with fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders should take this big risk on... consumer GPUs? I don't know man, I don't think that's where the chips are being pushed in on the table atm.
I just meant that it may be worth some short-term pain to make long-term share gains by capitalizing on Nvidia’s weakness. It’s a rare opportunity to snatch some mindshare. Especially with laptop OEM’s. I’d be pushing HARD for that marketshare while they’re all pissed at Nvidia. Once established, those relationship last a very long time.

That's pretty sad. $150 for a Polaris card is close to what I paid years ago when I picked one up on sale.

Can't you get similar performance out of a new APU? Maybe Phoenix isn't quite capable of beating it across the board, but Strix Point should be better for the top chips. 8700G is only $250 now.

Thank the FSM it hasn't gotten that bad. 1050ti being manufactured again. 1650 selling for $300+. 1030 2GB for $140. Those were dark days.

If I needed a card, I'd grab a combo - https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4765148

Soaking you for about $120 more than the combo should be.
Right?

Honestly, that bundle doesn't even offend me. The RMx 750 is good kit and the right PSU for that GPU and given how hard it chases the $750 ($999) 5070 Ti, it just is what it is.

They have very well paid people whose job it is to foresee these things - perhaps they should not have listened to MLID so much.

AMD claims they want to go for volume - get that 40-50% of the market*: ok, have they ordered enough capacity for this declared goal last year?

They had enough time to make at least 1 million units for this launch, where are they? Multiple cubes full of cards should have been shown as big as Cube the movie.

Q4 2024 market size for discrete GPUs was 8.4 mln - AMD therefore should have made plans to get 10 mln 9070s for this year, which is total fantasy number

* https://overclock3d.net/news/gpu-di...th-radeon-market-share-is-now-their-priority/

Well that's where the problem is - they don't want to sell GPUs as profit per mm is much lower than alternatives they have (for now), a very silly short sighted approach - Radeon should have accepted lower margin and make up for this in volume. Get creative = sell bundles of 9800X3D+9070XT, it was obvious that 9800X3D will be top seller.
I feel like so many of you folks don't understand supply chain management AT ALL. Also, these cards typically take anywhere from 90-150 days to produce, depending on building the chips and packaging complexity.

AMD CAN scale up, but they won't unless they know the volume will be bought. To do otherwise would cost them tons of money. They would eventually have to write off tons of inventory and sell at a discount. That eats into margins and possibly forces them to sell at a loss. One of the things that AMD has learned is to master the supply chain. Wholesalers and retailers also don't want to be left holding the bag either.

Actually, THE most important thing AMD needs to do with next gen is nail execution again. Folks who buy the 9xxx series will probably be satisfied. It is a legitimately good product. I will be buying one for the gaming PC I'm putting together for my teen (eventually, towards EOY probably, I already have a GPU to keep it going for now) If AMD can make RDNA5 sing, they will finally bring ATI some of the redemption some of us has felt is needed.

They just need something that beats my 4090 handily so that I have an excuse to upgrade! 🤣

For a measly $50 more you get the XT, therefore this thing bangs NOTHING. Nothing is getting banged by that stupid garbage upsell carnival trick of a card.

Good luck finding an XT for $50 more. I do agree that if we weren't living in clown world this card should have been at most $500 dollars, but 9070 XTs are listing for over $1,000 on eBay. I can technically buy a 9070 off of Amazon for only $700. So it's a measly $300 more unless I can find some bundle and resell the crappy power supply or whatever absolute turd has been bundled with a marked up 9070 XT in which case it might only be a modest $150 more for the XT.

An actual $550 9070 that you could buy isn't a bad deal in the real world. AMD should have held off for another month just to have more inventory available because once again MSRP is a fantasy price for anyone not willing to stand in line.

that is an insane ripoff. Norse will fly you from London to NTC for £300, and the current markup we have here is £800 retail, over $600 MSRP is a £336 markup. The markup is higher than the cost of the f* flight!

They have very well paid people whose job it is to foresee these things - perhaps they should not have listened to MLID so much.
This is another complete mis-understanding/fallacy. Nobody is forecasting the the market incumbent is going to suddenly vanish. Thats akin to saying - Well they should have predicted that Fab fire that happened. W/o inside info about the competitors secrets there is literately no way anyone could have predicted this with any sort of certainty that would be an acceptable for the financial risk of this proposed "Massive pre-release volume".
AMD claims they want to go for volume - get that 40-50% of the market*: ok, have they ordered enough capacity for this declared goal last year?
Firstly - They never said they would get to 40-50% market this year or even a time line that I have seen.
Secondly - What exactly would have been enough? Especially w/o knowing that Nvidia would flop this release. Open ended statements like that are not based in any sort of business reality, they are just wishful thinking.
This statement is just pretty much a constructed fallacy.
They had enough time to make at least 1 million units for this launch, where are they? Multiple cubes full of cards should have been shown as big as Cube the movie.
And again - Constructed fallacy.
They made what they predicted they would sell, based on market history and goals.

If Nivdia had showed up to the party, this wouldnt even be a talking point. People would just be laughing at AMD with too much stock that isnt selling, and saying - See nobody buys AMD.
