So it looks like Granite Bay - dual channel DDR SDRAM - will be offered as the new performance solution by Intel.

Evidently their agreement with Rambus won't be renewed.

So I can stop considering RDRAM as an alternative "performance" solution. It has no future.

Who remembers that from awhile back? I do (I started it) - I remember some heated 'debates' I had with a certain member of this board P) about how craptacular RDRAM was for the extreme price and how awful Rambus was for their business practices.

Ah, this is good news. It's only a matter of time...

I wish RDRAM wouldn't die, it has so much potential, ah well, there will be good replacements, but it has so much potential.

Neigh, its targetted for video cards.

The current spec for Yellowstone is 400Mhz, Octo-Pumped. At 16bit data width, it shold be 12.4GB/sec, at 128bit (not uncommon for graphics cards), near the 100GB/sec range. At this point, its still an infant, but who knows. Its still the most impressive memory technology on ANYONE's roadmap.

why did intel just say:

Has DDR overtaken Rambus as the memory of choice for Pentium 4 owners?

We support three memory standards now. We still are firmly behind RAMBUS. It is for the high end, the leadership platform. We appreciate that pricing issues, with RAMBUS memory prices not coming down as much as customers and we would have hoped lead to demand for other RAM variants. So we had to consider people who wanted a price point over performance, we do that through our 845 chipsets.

If you look at the sales figures of our motherboards it clearly shows that DDR based solutions are the most popular. SDRAM is a small percentage, catering for the value market with RAMBUS also being a small percentage catering for the high end, leadership platforms.

Regardless, they are not 'far from dead.'

In a magazine I have here there is a chart of market share comparing the various DRAM types from 1997 to what it is projected in 2006:

YEAR..........: 1999.2000.2001.2002.2003.2004.2005.2006.
SDRAM.......: 81%..86%..80%..52%.48%..47%..45%..40%.
DDR SDRAM: 0.......1%...10%..41%..50%..52%.54%..59%..
RDRAM........: 1%...2%....4%...4%....1%....1%...1%....1%....

I'm assuming this is related to PC market share because RDRAM is in the Playstation 2 as well. Perhaps Rambus will not go out of business, since they are a company based around designing technology and not producing technology that they design, so it is feasable that they will recover with new technologies. If they do recover, I just hope the technology is not STOLEN this time.

Yep, Intel is firmly behind Rambus - one foot is giving them the boot.

I have 1066 RAMBUS memory in my 2.8 and love it. I guess if it goes dead then I am out of luck. But hey I guess that I have a classic. Only 500 ever made.

Not to mention the fact that most of the hogh scores on 3dmark and pcmark are from people using RAMBUS. Of corse there are other considerations but I just don't see that many high scores with DDR.
