Hi,

Just thought Id give you a followup to my message about my "Athlon 1Ghz" being detected as a Duron 700.

Well I took the heatsink off, and sure enough, Duron chip. So I pulled the entire thing apart, and took the mobo back to the shop (with chip). He replaced it no question, so I am now running a Athlon 1ghz.

Not sure if I'll o/c yet! Just on that - my BIOS gives the ability to o/c (eg. its currently set at 10x 100 for the Athlon 1Ghz). Is it worthwhile upping above 100? Whats a "safe" number? (Im not sure if I want to pencil on the chip just yet!)

Thanks for all your help with the Athlon/Duron problem.

Joshua.

I looked for your other post w/no luck... so here is my unqualified rant

I would be PISSED if someone sold me a 1g and it turned out to be a Duron 700, mistake or no mistake. Was it overclocked to 1g? If so then I would be even more pissed. Who sold it to you? Was it a web retailer? I hate bad dealers.... damn ripoff artists... uhhh I guess I'm done.*

* If this was previously discussed, please ignore and proceed about your daily business as if it had not been mindlessly repeated.

You definitely got screwed on that one, even though you got your 1GHz eventually, selling you a Duron 700 in the first place is NOT right.

Sounds to me like the place tried to pull the wool over your eyes. I wonder if this "accident" has happened to others who made purchases there.

Hi,

Yeah it is hard to say whether it was an "intentional accident". It sure was annoying but I just wanted to get it fixed and get it over with. The sale was from a computer market that is held every weekend, where computer companies come to a shopping mall and sell.

When I returned it, he was arguing with some other customer on the phone, and just replaced my chip without a word. This leads me to believe perhaps either:

a. It has happened a fair bit before
b. He WAS trying to rip me off.

I am just glad I finally got what I paid for, and can now use it. There is definitely something to be said for buying from bricks and mortar stores, regardless of the small extra price rise.

So, with my other question, is it worth changing the Frontside Bus value in BIOS or do I have to do the pencil trick to get any O/C value?

No it wasnt overclocked, it was a run of the mill Duron 700. He obviously was talking to someone else when he looked at his chips, and installed the wrong one (he put it straight into the mobo)

well it depends on what MB you have. if you have a KT133a chipset, it would be worth your while to go up to 133 FSB (266 double pumped) If you want to overclock, I woudl definetely do the pencil trick (i do however suggest a more permanent conductor, e.g. rear defogger kit, or conductive pen) assumin you have a KT133 chipset, the highest FSB you'll get is to 110 (if you are lucky... possibly 112) which would get you 1100 MHz. With it unlocked, you could probably do 11.5*100 = 1150 MHz with relative ease. But now you have to be concerned with heat. What kinda Heatsink and fan do you have on there. And what kind of memory (an increase in FSB makes the mem run faster, and if its not top quality..... will likely cause lockups) Hope this gave some insight

Hi,

Well, I have an Asus A7V motherboard. The heatsink is a Super Orb (when I was looking over here in Australia at the computer markets it is pretty much the only one people are selling) the jury seems to be out on whether it is good or not. I know some people love it and some people hate it. I was going to post a discussion here in the group about it to see what you all think.

As for memory I'll have to recheck the brand. I have two 256 mem chips PC133.

I was hoping to just o/c through bios, but I guess the pencil trick could be ok - just a bit worrying, writing on my new chip!!
