Re-installing Windows XP. Question.

I am currently running XP but would like to do a clean install of it.
For some reason, my WINXP disc won't boot automatically upon restart.
So, I want to use a bootdisk.....

Can I use a bootdisk made for 98 (with all the trimmings, like access to the cd-rom drive), boot to A: then go to my cd-rom drive e:, and start the installation from there? That's how I used to do it for win2000 and win98. I just can't remember how I installed winxp last time.

you probably need to just set your BIOS to boot from CD...
or have you already tried that and it still doesn't boot?

I don't think you can do it that way, since WinXP has no DOS associations. Go to bootdisk.com and download the XP boot disc maker. It takes about 6 floppies if I remember correctly.

next time you pirate something, burn the actual image rather than just the files

edit: but yeah, win98 bootdisk will work.

boot to it, then run smartdrive.. then:

cdromdrive:\i386\winnt.exe

if that dosent work then teh boot disk will do it

Yes, this guy is correct. Read my post above, I provided a link to the boot files. And it does take forever to boot up with those disks.

No, you can boot from a 98se bootdisk. I remember now.

I need to find smarttdrive though.

If you're going to run winnt from dos, use smartdrv.exe. Its a bit slow if you dont.

But you should be able to just boot from the cd if you enable cd boot from the bios. If it doesnt boot after enablind cd boot, buy the OS next time.

Hey...You need to wipe the partition clean, and it will boot right up off of the cd (I have done this several times, once just last week.) Download delpart and wipe that drive clean!


Edit: BTW, I am using a REAL copy of XP at my office (One of my duties is to create workstation images for rollout).

got it.

Just booted with a 98se boot disk. formatted the c drive. Hopped over to the cd-rom drive. and started it.
