Re-using old parts

So I have some parts left over from a previous build I want to-reuse in a another machine.

I have a hard drive (WD 1 TB Caviar Black, XFX 5770 video card, Corsair 750tx PSU, case, optical drive and 8 GB of this memory: http://products.ncix.com/detail/corsair-xms3-cmx4gx3m2a1600c9-4gb-ddr3-da-42530.htm

I also have a ASUS LGA 1156 motherboard, but no processor.

It'll cost like $250 max to get a i5 750 for that dead socket

I'm just wondering if I'm better off getting a new mobo/processor instead and if the performance will be equal or better for $250. Also, what I should look at getting?

Also, will that RAM work with newer boards? I don't want to have to buy new RAM as well.

A used i5 750 shouldn't be quite that expensive. Check listings on Ebay.

You could certainly get a better CPU and mobo for $250, if you don't intend to overclock. For instance, a BioStar B85 mobo and an i5-4440.

The other thing is, another guy mentioned recently that he had an i7 of your generation, but no mobo. It seems LGA 1156 mobos are fairly expensive. You might try selling that one and adding the revenue to your budget.

Oh, that RAM: It's 1.65v which isn't great, but probably would be OK with a Haswell. To be on the safe side you could lower the voltage to 1.55v and the frequency to 1333.

Well, that makes things more interesting. I don't think I can fit an i5 with a mobo that has 4 RAM slots into $250CAD.

It's time to ask: What are you using this system for? And do you want to overclock it? Depending on usage, an i3 might win, the 750 might win, or an AMD system might win.

Given that an i3-3220 is close to a stock 750, the 4130 might match it in most things and should exceed it in single-threaded tasks. But, again, the RAM isn't preferred for modern Intel systems.

Edit: An FX-6300 leads in most things, but lags badly in some games.

when considering a few generations back. one have to consider the pre-owned.

for $250. will gladly sell you an i5-760 guarantee to hit 4.1ghz + evo 212 heatsink.

you should be able to pickup an i5-750 from fleabay for about ~$70. add ~$15 for i5-760.

good luck.

I don't really want to buy used, especially something from 4+ years ago that could be near the end of it's useful life. Plus being in Canada there aren't really any available on eBay aside from the US, so I have to shipping + duties and taxes on top of the price.

There's definitely no point in buying a new 1156 processor now. You should either get a used one or give up on the board. A CPU is something that I would worry about wearing out, it's one of the most (if not the most) durable parts of a PC.

Anyway, if you absolutely won't buy a used one, you're on the right track with your picks, but they are a little more expensive than than they should be. I'd step down one notch on the CPU and wouldn't pay the ASUS tax on the mobo.

i3 4130 $130
GA-B85M-D3H $80
