Subject: A question about an AnandTech post of yours

Hi my name is Courtney and I just saw your post in the AnandTech Forums,
under the Operating System forum. I was reading through your interesting
post on the merits of using Win 98 or Win2K Pro. Without getting into
too much detail, I am a student right now at U-Mass, and last semester my
friend offered to let me use his W2K pro disc to install W2K on my own
PC, however at the time I did not realize the huge benefits I would reap
if I just used W2K pro as my only O/S, and I also thought it just
wouldn't be worth the time it would take to install it.

Well now I am in a bind because my 6.4G Seagate HD that I bought in April
1997, is at the end of it's life span; and I'm worried that any day know
I will turn on my PC and will hear a loud, chugging sound coming from my
HD, which means its 'passed away' (I know from experience). So my
dilemma is that I need to buy a new HD, which will cost me at least $200
and I will have to scrape every penny together to get just this. And so
I?ll get right to the point; I'm basically writing to you to ask if you
would be so kind as to copy your W2K Pro disc, and then mail me the copy.
I know, I know you might be a bit hesitant about doing such a big favor,
but I am really desperate at this point, and I have no shame because of
this. So I was hoping that maybe you would be so kind as to copy your
disc of W2K Pro for me.

I know that you are probably thinking ?well why would I want to do that??
At this point I'm willing to go so low as to ask a fellow Anandtech
Forum mate for some help, as I am that desperate at this point. I really
need to install W2K on my new HD, as the benefits far outweigh any puny
downsides, compared to Win98. I never play games, and all I care about
is stability and being able to do things easier. If you would be so kind
to do this for me, I could mail you a new blank Kodak CDr disc so you
could copy it for me, and then you could just pop it in a self addressed
stamped envelope that I would include. As sign of my appreciation I
could include a few extra cdr discs to give to you, or I could even copy
some software that I have.

Believe me, usually I would never ask someone such a huge favor of
someone that I don't even know, but I?m really in a bind. I only have a
limited amount to spend, and I really have to get a new HD, as I'm
getting to the dangerous point here, as my HD is older than the warranty
period that came with it. I just don't have the extra cash it would take
to get W2K pro, and I can't do both, so I am hoping that you could help
me out. If you can help me out, then I will be forever in your debt and
eternally grateful. However, if you decide not to, then no hard
feelings, I can understand if you would rather not. Thanks a lot for
your time in reading my 'plea' and I hope to hear from you soon.

xxx

This is very wrong. and the mods should permanently ban this person.

NOTE: I have edited out the e-mail address and name, and contacted Trifecta for a complete copy, including headers. We will look in to it.

I was just licking the stamp when I read this. I was going to mail him/her my original disc and my COA, he/she promised to send it back as soon as they got it loaded. I guess this means I shouldnt send it??? You seem to think it is a scam.

Heh... She's only giving you what, a few extra cd-r in return? Seriously - this sounds like one of those hoax emails that I'm always getting. I wonder what happened to Regan's friend who loaned her the W2K disc?

Get a shipping address and stuff then shoot back an e-mail that you work for the Microsoft Software Piracy Dept (make it real official looking) tell them MS always hates to go after the little guy, but sometimes it is your only recourse. Tune the story up real nice with "we are now tracking your on-line activities via your CPU serial number", "your ISP always cooperates fully with us on fraud investigations." Federal law requires that we pursue and investigate all manners of software piracy. Software piracy is a Federal offense punishable by up to 10 years in a Federal Prison and fines up to $150,000. Spend some time toying with them and really scare the crap out of them. Or just FWD the mail to MS and let them have all the fun.

lol, I'm guessing that at least 80% of users on this board didn't actually buy their operating system.

Just saying.

Guess which category I fall into. I've never not bought my own software, including my OS - but I did get Office 2000 for $25 because I was a still technically a University student and they got some deal from Microsoft. Now if I could only get that same deal with Dreamweaver....

wtf is wrong with you people? you don't have the slightest bit of empathy for a college student tight for cash (don't tell me you were never in that situation). You act like you want to give her the death penalty for just asking a favor, jesus.

Yes, software piracy is a crime. Is anyone being tortured, maimed or killed though? Are you sending her crack cocaine in the mail? hardly.. do you guys get kicks out of sending people to prison, getting them large fines and probably ruining their lives? i don't, oddly. If you don't agree with software piracy you could just ignore the email and let it be.

some of you honsetly make me sick

(of course, this is all assuming this isnt a scam )

Edit - you know what? Forget it. You'll believe whatever it is you feel comfortable with.
