Wait! She's for real, I tell you! I sent her all my credit cards and she promised to return them soon. In fact, so as not to inconvenience me she asked when I wouldn't be home so that she could drop them off for me! Wow!

If she's a starving college student, all she needs to do is cut back on the beer for a week or two and she'll have enough for both a hard drive and win2k.

Her logic is amazing... "my hard drive might go out, so could you please send me an illegal copy of your os?"

She's either a complete idiot, or she works for the anti-piracy division of microsoft.

She gets no sympathy from me. It's not that I can't relate, I AM A POOR COLLEGE STUDENT. Guess what? I have a legit copy of Win2k Pro, as well as Win2k server and Advanced Server from my MS HOT kit.

Plus she has the idea to make up this "hard drive failure" excuse. Anandetchers are a little too sharp to fall for that.

Or...this can be from the FEDz, trying to test to see if anyone is willing to break the privacy law. Next thing u know, they'll be knocking on your door.

I am in the 20% group. Even though I spend my personal money to get legal software. I do have to accept that I do have some stuff that I couldnt possibly buy. They are here, and they sit and collect dust. I dont use those CD's (not until I can get a dedicated server to run that app).

Anyway should I tell BSA or the Anti Piracy Guys about this one company that I know who's business is based on pirated software. I used to work there (techinically I am not laid off, but they dont have funds to have me come and do work, plus they have another full time guy so they dont need a part timer.), and was under the assumtion that the software was legal until i saw they looking thru a .NFO

I feel guilty that all this was going under my nose. However when I did find out I tried to legalise it and the owner didnt want anything to do with me.

I smell the BSA behind that one. Unless she could prove she's not part of a piracy group or whatnot, I would be really skittish over it. Sure, a female asking for alcopy of Win2K, which most of us have and didn't cost us, sounds like a good way to get your foot in the door Kinda like the coppers putting those fake prostitutes out there on the streets busting people. Smells like entrapment to me.

If she's really a struggling college student, she should have access to her college's labs. I wouldn't trust her, it just doesn't sound right.

Wait a minute! This one can't be smart enough to be in college. Anyone who hangs around here and has any sense at all knows how to find a decent sized new drive for around $100. That leaves the other $100 to find an OEM copy of the OS from a local dealer.

Ah, but if you had some time, it would be a perfect opportunity for a nice little virus.

Can you low level format a hard drive with a batch command?

<< you don't have the slightest bit of empathy for a college student tight for cash >>

Empathy for a college student? Maybe. For a thief? No.

the 80% here not buying their ISP was obviously a guess. Would anyone argue with my point though, that the majority here probably got a copied CD off a friend or something? Maybe I'm totally off the mark.
