Universal is preparing to start work on a Battlestar Galactica movie. Variety says the studio is planning to completely reimagine the sci-fi story — in which space-bound humans fend off the attacks of nefarious cybernetic Cylons as they try to find a new home — just five years after the four-season Syfy TV show set in the same universe drew to a close. The planned film would mark the second time Battlestar Galactica has been rebooted after the original show aired in 1978.

I love BSG, but I think the format works better when you have more time to tell the story. Not sure if even a 3-4hr movie is going to cut it.

So this is the Glen Larsen project that's been kicking around for years.

I love me some pew pew science fiction and BSG is well suited to a movie that just shows the escape of the Galactica and the rag tag fleet.

It would also lend itself to being open ended and allowing for two more movies to tell the rest of the story...

if the movie makes good money.

My first thought was that if it sucks it will simply be forgotten, and if it's good I might just enjoy it, so why not? But, then I remembered I thought the same thing back when New Trek was announced, and, well...

well new trek does suck, so that isn't saying much. it's trek in name only.

And thats being generous.

Which was my whole point. That level of failure and the commercial success that followed it make me hesitant to embrace any sort of reboot.

Not all failed attempts have the decency to just fade away, like Total Recall or Red Dawn did. Some fails are too big to fail, so we're stuck with them forever, like SW: Episode I, New Trek, and possibly this new Battlestar.

reboot it....who cares? Star Trek shows that you can reboot something ad infitium without soiling the concept, if the original concept is adored.

id rather see something then nothing at all.

peoples hate of new trek is a little exaggerated. it was a decent movie, but way mainstream so it turned off the hard core crowd. but id say most of the hard core own it and love it.

movie audiences are very forgiving...if you put out a good product, they will come

Hm.. will have to wait and see until more information comes out.

I could see it working, but I could see it not working, too.

Seems too soon and I agree that the story can't be adequately told in 1 movie. A trilogy could work, but would probably end up like the Matrix, first movie being Epic, the rest being disappointments in comparison.

Someone needs to do another series like BSG. God that show was amazing until it went completely bananas in the last season.

The rebootitis virus is striving in Hollywood these days.

many great movies are just rebooted books or literary material. Been like that for ages There is something to be said though when you reboot The Incerdible Hulk threee times in a short span

Skeptical about the reboot, but we'll see.

The weirdness starts at the end of season 1. If you didn't realize you were in for some weird stuff in the S1 finale, you weren't paying close enough attention. Let's not forget that Head Six flat out tells Baltar that she's an angel in S2. Most people didn't take that line seriously and thought the finale was surprising or something. Little stuff like that. I actually didn't pick up on that line until the 2nd time I watched it. The show is much more consistent if you watch it from the right perspective, which most that disliked the end did not. But, even the 2nd time around, I realized how they keep beating the drum of mythology, religion, spirituality, prophecy, etc. from the very start. I also particularly liked that they didn't explain everything in the show. Weird things happen, and you don't know any more than the confused, human characters do. Some things never get a hard explanation without necessarily feeling like they just trailed off.

Awww, you gotta be kidding me... I'm halfway through season 3. Damn it son...

Just remember that it's not actually a science fiction...it's a drama that talks more about god(s), mythology, religion, angels, etc. than science stuff (which, in many ways, the mythology IS real). Again, if you didn't pick up on that late S1 and throughout S2, you missed the point.

I personally loved how strange and epic things got in the end, yet at the same time very human, and it only gets better the more times you watch it (you can pick up on elements you missed earlier, and everything makes a lot more sense). S1 was boring, I thought, right up until the end. You'll see most people that didn't like how the show turned out tend to really like S1.

All the God/Religion stuff was there since middle of season 1.

The only people who think that religion wasn't a huge part of the series since the beginning are blind.

They need to just continue the Blood and Chrome series. We don't need a new movie.

I think this is too close to the last reboot. The two will be compared and it will be hard for the movie to compare favorably and still reach a mainstream audience. Modern Sci-Fi movies can't have real drama anymore unless the whole thing is an art piece, and the tension and drama made BSG.

They would be better served going further back and rebooting something else. Something far enough back so that when they give us a CGI-laden action movie instead of true Sci-Fi you shrug and go "at this this looks way better than the old TV show."

Farscape, Stargate, B5, or even a less spacey Sci-Fi like X-Files.

Reboot something else.

Edit: Glad to hear Stargate is getting a reboot, that is long enough. Those CRTs and fat LCDs when I rewatch SG1 kills me.
