Readyboost

I've got a laptop on order, and I'm already thinking about ways to improve it's performance.

Every mention of readyboost I've seen talks about using thumb drives for it; will it also work with other types of flash memory? SD/CF/whatever? My reason for asking is the laptop I've got coming has a built in SD slot, and I'd rather use that than having a thumbdrive sticking out, waiting to be broken off. I won't use the slot otherwise - my camera uses CF.

It'll work with an SD card, yeah. Not that it'll make a huge difference, but you could buy a 4GB one, slap it in and forget about it.

Is the difference really that minor? And is that a product of being a young (or just crappy) tech, being redundant (cache on HDDs), weak performance from flash memory?

Are SD cards fast enough for Readyboost? I'm pretty sure Readyboost didn't work unless the flash drive was faster than a certain speed. Could be wrong, though.

i'm sure vista tests the drive before it'll bother.
if it doesn't like direct from sd, it'll take it with a usb flash reader.
not sure its worth the effort. as said, ram is more important, and its cheap

I gave a serious trial to ReadyBoost, it is ready but it does Not Really Boost anything.

However it is Very good future technology. In few years it would be part of Hard Drives and we probably will be able to start a computer on the spot with very small Boot time.

In the future we won't have platter hard drives. There won't be any spinning, spooling, whining or wizzing. The OS will just *poof* load like it was in RAM.

The future is already here. Get yourself a Memoright or Mtron ssd and you'll never need ReadyBoost again.

We've been promised that, along with cities in the sky and flying cars and I have yet to see any .
