I'm a fan of NY hip hop, but was never a fan of Papoose. Ghostface is nice, but something about his voice bothers me. GZA's flow and lyrics are sick though.

I think Pap is awesome. When the the nacirema dream dropping?

Those are a few more recent ones I like

Plus all of the old school stuff that is too numerous to mention (Tribe, De La, BDP, etc, etc...)

There is a tonne of good stuff out there, you just need to look/ask. There is a thread here that lists some good stuff: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2021819.

Underground Hip-hop ftw.

I only heard of the dude last year when I heard Got Up This Morning and I was blown away. Along with Lupe Fiasco, two of the best lyricists of their generation IMO. The Cool. There oughta be a law against using that many metaphors in one song.

Oh, and let's not forget about Sol.illaquists of Sound. Almost too much soul for 4 individuals to contain. Best clip I could find: Text

Heh, you linked to Got Up this Morning twice. I'm not sure what you were trying to link to for Sol.illaquists of Sound, but I found a couple of clips and they look fantastic, I'll have to check them out, thanks!

Papoose has like 50 mix tapes, funny how he got a huge deal with Jive - I think 2 mill? And they ended up dropping him, wonder if he had to pay all that back. He has some good songs, I honestly haven't heard enough to run around screaming he's the next Jay Z. That song he did talking about Police Brutality is pretty damn nice though.

I'm a fan of lyrical rap, regardless of what they rap about. Crooked I's a good example, he's pretty much on gangsta #### but he's deep and has tons of metaphors and kills pretty much every verse he's on. As much as I love Hip-Hop, I know we'll never have another Fat Boys or Run DMC. The hay days are behind us, but there's still a lot of quality non bling/ho rap out there.

Right now forget Papoose, Joell Ortiz is the future, his Bodega Chronicles is one of the best albums I've heard in years. Dude is too vicious anyone who hasn't heard him do yourself a favor and check these links

125 Grams (pt 1)

Freestyle - Aftermath

freestyle - tribute to Big Pun

Joell is a monster, he was signed to Aftermath for a minute, heard Dre let him go. A damn shame cos very few dudes are seeing him on the mic.

I wondered about Latryx; shame really because they were great. Never thought to look for lyrics born though, thanks.

Dont wanna thread crap or anything, everyone knows I hate hip hop with a passion, but it is for the same reason I also hate pop, and similar music styles (hip hop and pop are nothing alike you say? they are in one thing, as explained below)

Im just here to ask, does anyone know of an hip hop "group" which can actually play instruments? You know, instead of just using a sampled beat over and over with some guy talking... Thats my problem, so if someone can show me a band that has some skill, I will reckon hip hop can be good

Usually I listen to most kinds of metal or progressive rock etc (you know, "flashy" music by normal standards) and I can even appreciate some techno to boot! While most techno doesnt have any instruments either, the kind I like has some great melodies which could be used in a classical or rock song, thats what makes it great for me... But hip hop is devoid of melody, it puts me to sleep

Again Im not here to flame, so dont act all offended cuz someone doesnt join the hip hop worship in this thread

many many many artists can play instruments in the hip hop world..........kanye west, outkast, cypress hill, beastie boys just off the top of my head.

However you misunderstand the roots of hip hop. It came from poor inner city people that could not afford much of anything let alone instruments. They used to beat box ( make beats with just there mouth and then rhyme over them) . This evolved to what it is today.

cypress hill, love them but the most repetitive chorus on the face of this planet with what they do, and its gets repetitive..

i would go out on a limb and say the beastie boys are the most talented hip hop artists of our time hands down. they have fun, make fun and their shows are a lot of fun, constantly changing up from rap song to instrumental.
all these artists now singing about having lots of money, trying so hard to be different by wearing non-conforming clothes or spelling their name different....
give me a rock band anyday of the week..

same can be said for rock bands. They sound alike, looke alike, sing about the same shit. 98% isn't creative or innovative at all.
