I have worked a few places and find regardless of where I work or who I am talking to if they have to point to something on my screen they have to touch it. What is the deal with this, I feel violated. That is my personal space and I should be the only one to touch it. It does not matter if it is an engineer, office person, a guy from the shop with greasy hands, or the guy in the cubicle next to me, they all do it.
Is it that hard to hold your finger, pen, or pencil an inch or two away from the screen when pointing at it? I have a nice clean screen and someone comes in to talk to me and while pointing out changes that need to be made they are plastering finger prints all over the screen. I have had guys pointing with their pen or pencil at the screen (and they alway use the point) and moving it along and kind of drawing how the part needs to be and as soon as they leave I look a little closer at my screen and there is a pen drawing on my screen. Today my supervisor was showing me something on my white board and referring to my screen and tapping with the open end of the dry erase marker on my screen leaving little dots.
I keep telling people "don't write on the screen", but the concept doesn't seem to make sense to people. I wonder if I need to get a big sign that says "Touch my screen and I will rip your arm off!" It is one of those things that you are not paying full attention to what they are saying becuase you are watching their finger get dangerously close to the screen and you are thinking: "Are they going to touch the screen, should I say something? No don't say anything becuase if they don't touch it I don't want to come across like a jerk. Ok, maybe they won't touch it, they are almost done." And then bam, they plaster a big print or two right in the middle of the screen.
I have decided this is an annoyance I will have to live with for the rest of my career. I can't believe there has not been a Dilbert cartoon about this.
