Just wait until Microsoft starts making "surface" computers. Complete with coffee cup rings, finger smudges, food sauces dripped on them. Then your supposed to leave your PDA, music player, phone, camera, and whatever other device you have sitting on top of this thing. Then eventually restaurants will be filled with these things and we'll have advertisements playing in the surface of the table at all times while we're trying to eat, or do work, or whatever you normally use a table for.

I totally sympathize. My grad school adviser was like 72 at the time and he did this *all the time.* This was a time when we had nothing but CRTs in the lab, but i still had to run around with a bottle of windex and paper towels. Of course i never cleaned his monitor, just the 6 or so others in the lab. I still remember his reaction the first time he did this with a laptop lcd. The image got all distorted and he *jerked* his hand away and had the look of a 6 year old in trouble on his face.

I hate that with a passion

My grandmother does it all the time to my laptop. It's coupled with her incessant leaning over my shoulder and never going away. Both of these things of course equate to me wanting to slap her (although I never have).

Oh ya, I know exactly what you go through man and I feel the same way.

I just pretend the people that touch my screen are monkeys from then on that don't know any better.

Nevermind, apparently I did have it in my archives
I was wrong, it wasn't Alice.

Awsome! Thanks, hung it up on my wall.

Stuck it to the side of my monitor, next one who touches my LCD's screen ... dies ... horribly

7/10 rant

Keep your fucking fingers away! In school, they just PUSH on monitor, it is all smudgy, there are even pencil/pen scratches. UGH! I gotta slice off some fingers off these bastages...forget the ketchup sauce!

What we need is some mad scientist to invent a transparent energy field. Install this field 1 inch away from screen and whenever a finger/pen/pencil enters it, it is melted/roasted/chopped/shocked.

I greatly enjoy a clean, print free screen.

Luckily the way my cube is, it'd take to much effort for someone to reach over me to touch my screen.

While we're on the topic of screens being dirty.. My managers screen is disgusting.

He tends to have a habit if spraying a little bit of spit when he talks about something that excites him and apparently over the few years he's had this LCD and has had conversations on the phone while facing it, it now has a caked on layer of saliva.

Really grosses me out when I'm in there and he turns his screen to show me something and the sun light catches it.

I guess it is a friendly reminder of what you showed him. If you have to ask your boss about something on your computer, he wants to be sure you never ask again. Looks like he succeeded.

Why don't LCDs have a sheet of glass in front for protection...weight? Cost?

A good friend of mine used to do this all the time, it drove me nuts. He would just get excited about something and had to point it out. My solution was to stop using the computer around him.

As far as what to do at work, get a bottle of screen cleaner and a rag, and keep it next to your screen. Any time somone touches your screen, clean it off immediately while they are still talking to you. In fact, if you can, hit their finger or pen with the screen cleaner if at all possible. Eventually they will get the point or you will get fired. Either way, problem solved.
