If I'm not mistaken, I think there's a US law that prohibits an individual from owning one of these (I'm almost sure of it). Seems funny now

And such a deal too with only a $50 bid on it right now. Of course, they predict that it's going to cost somebody $60,000 to remove it...and the buyer is liable for any damages occured to their building during removal (guess that means that the construction helicopter I was going to use is out of the question)...

Really? Can't own your own supercomputer? Wouldn't be much of a free country would it? Anyway if you can afford one of these then you can probably afford to incorporate some bogus S-corporation not to mention pay the electric bill. (Unless you're buying to be a boat anchor or door stop).

Buy it, create a fictious corporation and run SETI@Home on it and see how quickly you become the number one ranked user.

It is all irrelevant anyway since this auction is not for a Cray supercomputer, but an obsolete tape storage library and a Cray J916 controller (equivalent processing power of a 386 Intel PC) used to drive the tape library. They state they had this library connected to a Cray J90 which is a supercomputer, but there is no mention of the J90 being included (Yeh Right!). Unless you need mega-terabytes of storage and own your own power substation, this is useless as a functional unit. However, if you are in the salvage business and have the proper equipment there is enough gold in the system to pay for the salvage

Mmmm, maybe I'll buy me one of these...

This thing could run the SETI@home servers, much less outdo all the other computers...

I dont know what this means exactly. Why the custodian, or is there another meaning for the word that I dont know.

Please contact the custodian for additional information about this item(s) and for inspection dates and times.

"The custodian" is probably some supercomputer brain that you have to contact before you buy this. Kinda like in that one scifi movie where the bad guy is called "The custodian".

$60k is probably the estimate because typically when Cray machines are de-installed our service department is called so it's guaranteed that it was taken down and shipped properly. I honestly have no clue if $60k is a lot or a little for a service/move contract, but that's only if you want to use it at the next site. If you're buying it for the 18 miles of copper wire or the gold heatsinks or the nostalgia, it won't cost more than a forklift rental and a U-Haul truck.

I've seen these at Bank One's off site backup facility. They are worthless hunks of junk. There are desktops that are faster.

The original cray's contained something like $18k worth of gold in them, and were selling for like >$10k. Of course, I couldn't tell you how to get the gold out of one... also, you can't use these devices anyhoo, since they're not FCC class C devices, or what not.

If it comes with everything in the picture, screw adding on to the house. Just park that baby on a lot at the trailer park and put some tar on top of it then your all set.

It means they want you to contact the owner of the machine which is NASA in Texas.
