Realistic speeds from a wireless router?

10mb Connection from Brighthouse... 802.11g network.

Hardwired into the router, my speakeasy speedtest shows 9.5-10mbps... Most downloads are in the 800-1.2mb/s range...

Wireless is another story. On my Mac Mini upstairs (wireless, about 15 feet up and sideways from the router), speedtest shows 8-9mbps connection, downloads are usually 300-600kbps.

On my laptop (which i believe is having an issue w/ the 2200bg), even standing next to the router (< 1ft), speed tests show 1.5-2mbps if im lucky (sometimes even < 1mbps), downloads are 50kbps-300kbps.

What kind of speeds are realistic from a wireless router? Should the laptop, when standing next to the router, be almost as fast as a wired connection?

I'm having the exact same issue. I just moved into a new apartment and decided to go wireless. I purchased the WRT54GS v2.1 and a matching speedbooster PCI card. Hardwired I get 9Mb download, on wireless I get 5Mb (using the Speakeasy speed test)?!?! I was under the impression the 54GS was capable of 54Mb?

I have two issues I think. One is I have 3 other routers on my site survey, I've read this limits wireless speeds because of the wait-before-sending protcol that 802.11b/g uses. Two is I have massive interference in my new building, I can actually pick a 60Hz hum with my FM radio. I have yet to investigate that further.

So far the new router is a bust if it can't even run over 5Mb. Hopefully someone has an answer.

wireless will adjust its speed according to the singal quality and if there are any errors.

the data rates are...
speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0

so if you are in a noisy environment it is not unusual for wireless to operate at the 2.0 or 5.5 Mbs speed. Try with the client in the same room as the access point.

I did, the results are posted above.... I just want to know what type of speeds i should be seeing when connected at 54mbps.

I get 1.5MB/s on my wireless connection, which works out to 12mbs.

i got 1.3megabits/s for both wireless and wired.

stupid frickin alltel and their 1.5Mb speed.

try the usual channles of 1, 6, 11 on your access point
