Really hot (temp) switch/router. Leave on?

my intel switch is getting hot and is loud b/c of the fan. it makes me kind of nervous that it's constantly hot and buzzing...
is it designed to be left on for 365 days in a row?
same withe router..

any help?

I have an SMC switch with a built in fan and a Cisco Router and it gets hot as hell, but I don't think there's gonna be any problem cuz switch were built to be on 24/7.

slightly OT, but my switch never even gets warm, and i have yet to hear the fan on, or even tell its on. its a 5 port dlink switch, with 3 comps hooked up to it, one of which is a server giving files over irc.

does anyone else have a dss 5+ and does yours ever get hot?

Try this...Take a small thermometer and get a temp reading. If it's running over 120degrees call the company and complain. Otherwise, I'd say it's probably ok...or call em anyway and ask them what the normal running temperature is supposed to be. If they blow you off or give you some kind of answer like "it's supposed to do that" and hang up and you get that feeling that they're lying, then call them back and tell them that the switch isn't working properly because of the problem and then they will design better equipment and hopefully replace yours.

-BUY CISCO or the cheapest thing made... One extreme or the other...unless it's Netgear. PEACE OUT!

I actually just got my DSS5+ yesterday, had it on for 12 hours and it realy only got warm. I know that these hubs are meant to be on 24/7 though, maybe something could be wrong with the hub internally? Fan is crapping out? Who knows, it could just be a hub doubling as a stove top

The design of the product will dictate if a fan is needed in it or not.
If the product requires a fan, then if the fan starts to fail (this can be noticed by some nasty sounds coming from the fan) the unit will start to get hotter than it is designed to do. This will result in one or more of the components failing... and here you wish the product had lifetime hardware warranty

My advice is that if the fan is making nasty noises, and the unit is getting hot... return it for repair before it completely goes.

I know I'm asking for trouble, but I took the fan out of my allied telesyn lanedge 8 port switch. It was too loud. So I took it out. It doesn't get very hot and only has 3 connections on it. It's been that way over a year.
