really slooooow computer at work - shouldn't be that slow

there's this computer at work that i think is slower than it should be. i dunno what's wrong with it though. it's a dell... and sometimes it just lags up. even when i'm typing... it'll stop displaying the new characters, give a beep, then go back to normal. and it takes a few seconds to load webpages. i'm on a t1 connection, this is a P3 933, with 512 mb of RAM, it should NOT be this slow. what could be the problem? it's driving me crazy. if somebody can just tell me what that beep is (when i'm typing) i guess that would be a good start to pinpointing the problem.

you *are* running win2k, right? check your task maanger and look at your processes. Sometimes you'll be running memory hog apps (esp ones that are activated by a logon script). Look for you CPU usage and CPU time

My PC at work always seems to crap out when I have a lot of ethernet connections.. like when my ftp program is searching a directory or transferring files to another server.. It's got a built in ethernet port so maybe that's why, who knows.

I think as a general rule they find a way to make workstation PCs for companies severely underperform

no, 98. and i looked at the task manager and there isn't anything unusual.

I am having a similar problem with my PIII. It lags up and becomes really slow for a while. I am running a clean install of 98, so I would be interested if anyone can answer this issue. Thanks.

we had this problem at our place, they were also dells. This was a couple years ago, they were P3 800s and paid through the nose for them, imo. I notice my trusty k6-2 450 was running about the same speed for normal office stuff, and it boots up almost as fast. I took one off the network, changed everything around, it ran a bit faster but far slower than the computer would be if I built it.... but remembering its a dell, I guess thats what you pay for. Their p3 systems sucked, they really weren't fast, the onboard video blows and the onboard sound is almost as bad. The computer would lock up for a sec when you beat soltaire (I know those moving cards are stressful but.... )

I've sworn off dells ever since then, I never used them anyway, but I refuse to even let someone get one from them. I think thats your answer... you have a dell.

yes, i figured as such, but we have dells upstairs and they're just fine. i can't figure it out. they are different models though. grrr... yes i know what you mean though, i could have built a computer twice as fast for half the money.

oh my god, it is fast! i don't know what happened, but after months of being slow, it decides to be fast today! yay.... i'm going to enjoy it while i can.
