I am running an old laptop on Ubuntu 10.10 and it won't see this adapter. It says it supports Linux and has drivers for it, but I am not sure how to install it. I tried NDISWRAPPER with the windows drivers, but it says connected and can't even ping the gateway. Anybody have any advice?

Thanks,

Mike M.

Well, it comes with Linux drivers on the disk, but I am unsure how to "install" them, since apparently you need some command line work to do it.

Thanks,

Mike M.

Madjocko, you're better off asking about this on the Ubuntu forums.

If anyone, like me, cut into the mini-CD when trying to open the darn plastic casing, and needs to download Windows drivers, here's the response from tech support:

Please click on the following link:

http://218.210.127.131/downloads/do...=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Go to "Step 1" and check mark the box next to "RTL8191SU". Proceed to "Step 2" and click on "Go". Go to the "Windows" section and click on one of the 3 download link to the right of "Utility and Driver Auto Installation Program (Support Win2K/XP/Vista/Win7)(Install Shield v1.00.0175)".

Cheers...

thanks for posting this. i guess the way i went about it was right. not sure why my adapter doesnt work as well as my laptop's, but maybe its just because my netbook has a really good wireless chip in it already.

If you're looking for a matching router, Directron has the Netgear WNDR3700 on sale. These are supposed to be the fastest N routers out there.

That router looks nice id have to check the reviews somewhere else i really have not liked netgear in past. (then again new linksys are no good to me either) Anyone else tell about range on these.. one guy says the internal laptop wifi picks up better signal (but internal wifi cards use big antena's that go into your laptops screen too so are prob better because of this.. ) can use a usb extension cable to point it / get better signal. I bought a 20' usb cable to put the usb wifi outside one my friends apartment so he could pick up signal very far away.

The Cisco E4200 has been shown to surpass it. $149.99 at Best Buy with $6 ground shipping, or $179.99 at the Cisco store with overnight shipping included. Faster routing, and faster wireless, but $40 more.

i think the only other thing that i would really want is for the software to support access-point mode. i doubt it will though, realtek usually skips that sort of thing.

It's in the spec list:

Specification:

RF Chipset: Realtek RTL8191SU

1T2R 802.11n MIMO (One Transmit and Two Receive path)

Standard: IEEE 802.11b/g/n. 802.3, 802.3u

Software AP supported

So I tried this adapter the other night on my gaming rig to get a feel for performance. I don't have an N router, but I was comparing it to a PCI Wireless N card that had one of its antennas break off. With the PCI, on a certain server I get arond 45-50 ping. When I disabled that and installed and used the USB adapter, my ping was up in the 70-80 range. I noticed this trend in several servers, so something must be going on. Kinda let down that it gets outperformed by my half broken PCI card.

Technically it really shouldn't affect your ping if the signal is the same or better. Driver issue?

i guess i missed that. still, i didnt see it either in the software. ill have to check again.

because even if these do turn out to be semi-low performing (im not seeing amazing results and now others are admitting it too), if AP mode works well then it would still be a good deal. i like versatility in my hardware anyway...

they do work fine though, i dont want to make it sound like these are junk.

I received my two, one for my mbp and another for a friend's mbp. We're both taking a Networking class where we're using WireShark (which isn't compatible with the mbp's wireless chip)

Who's bright idea was it to have Mac Drivers (and apparently Linux drivers, too) in a self-extracting .exe file? Annoying.

That being said, I'm pretty surprised with how nicely it played with OS X, Parallels and BackTrack 4 (in parallels).

plugged this into a box that had the rosewill external multi antenna adapter from a month or so ago, and it was identified as that adapter... kind of funny... on a box with no previous adapter it picks right up as a realtek in win7 64... but performance isn't too amazing and latency is high, just like the rosewill adaptor... usb nics seem ok for stuff, but not gaming...

I think that just means both adapters use the same chip, which means they have the same hardware id. you just used it with rosewill-packaged drivers, which are just the realtek drives rebranded. sometimes the 3rd party company will include other software that enables more features, but usually its the same exact driver with a different label in device manager.
