I was wondering if any of you great users knew of a moderately priced (less then 150 USD) printers that are very good - primarily for printing essays/school documents and the occasional color document - rarely if at all photos.

My main concern is the cost of printer cartridges - I have one of those freebie Dell Printers but at 50 dollars a cartridge it is ridiculous!

Thanks very much!

are you high? you don't need a $150 printer to print essays and word documents. i used to get printers at stores like target and walmart for like $20. all they didn't have was a usb cable. 2 lexmarks, an hp, and even once one of those nice lexmark 3 in 1's. no rebates.

Sorry I didn't mean to post this in the wrong forum - assumed it was a 'deal' type issue - which forum would a question like this go to?

I don't care about the price of the printer - I am asking you Hot Dealers if you consistently see any good deals for one brand of printer cartridge and thus the printer that goes with it.

If you're printing essays, just buy a laser. You don't need color, and and essay printed out on an inkjet looks like complete crap compared to the laser.

I currently own the Brother HL-2070N.

Doesn't help if your actual essay itself is crap....

OH! Zing!

I've picked up Samsungs (eg., ML-1710) at incredible prices AR, as low as $20, that work great. The cartridges have been refillable, although I don't know that to be the case with the newer models.

I never buy new cartridges, just wait around to see a printer for $20 as that's usually slightly cheaper than 1 cartridge and I not only get both cartridges, but a printer that will use them! Neat, huh?

For a cheap ppg laser jet, go with Canon.

But for nice looking essays, go with keeleysam's suggestion.... get a laser printer.

I got a deal on a Minolta 1350W laser for $8 AR 2 years ago, still using the original cartridge. The current color lasers are going for between $149 and $179, either refurb or after rebate, especially @ Fry's, about once a month.

But I agree, check your paper's inserts, and find a $20 deal. Or, if you absolutely must have a laser, Samsung and Brother can both be had for about $80 (lasers are better for essay papers - cleaner text and have the extra benefit of largely smear proof type on normal paper). Buy a $20 inkjet for any color prints you need to add.

I refill cartriges at the local ink depot.

They cost about half as much and do a great job. The ink is the same quality that any of the printer manufacturers include.

I will always keep going back to ink refill stores (as long as they are as good quality as the one I currently goto)

For quite a while I thought Canon made the best inexpensive inkjet printers.

I recommend the Pixima 4300 which is new and can be found new for $80 dollars or less.

Is has 5 ink cartridges so you only replace the color you need, the print quality for photos is nearly as good as any 6 color printer. Plus the ink cartridges are cheap, even if you need to get genuine cartridges, they last a decent amount of prints.

Don't bother with really cheap printers, the ink for those is so expensive that you will be better off buying another printer.

The other way is to go laser, but then you don't have color printing, at least not in your price range unless I am very wrong.
