The splitter is likely the problem then. You might need a special one to pass both the TV and the Internet signals through. The cable guy installed a splitter out in the box; I never got a good look at it, but from it, we have a direct-run cable to our cable modem - more or less. It's a direct run to the wall socket - from there, we just used a regular coax cable from a retail store, and it works fine. Maybe 50-60 feet total run.
Maybe the cable company can help out here with parts you'd need.
Or, do you have two separate lines into the house, one for the Internet, one for TV? If so, split up the TV line, and leave the Internet wire just for the cable modem.
